Veer building revolutionary ships: the first emission-free vessels on the OCEAN
Veer, an innovative Bahamian company, is on track to deploy the world’s first purely zero-emission container vessel capable of crossing the ocean.
Veer has announced that it has selected the German shipyard Fosen Shipyard for the construction of its first two container ships, which will be powered by wind energy and supplemented by hydrogen fuel cells. These revolutionary vessels, known as “Design Nº1,” will be the first absolutely zero-emission container ships according to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) definition.
Veer is securing financing of 50 million euros through a letter of intent from Amsterdam-based PROW Capital. The company has also announced the launch of a Series A investment round to attract investors who want to contribute to transforming maritime transport.
Technical Specifications and Innovations
The 100-meter-long vessels will use DynaRig sails and hydrogen fuel cells. With these technologies, they will be capable of reaching speeds of up to 18 knots with a range of up to 10,400 miles. Thanks to the hydrogen fuel cells, the ships will be able to maintain a speed of 11 knots with a range of 1,200 miles.
The vessels will have a capacity between 152 and 160 TEU, including the capability to transport refrigerated containers. The design of the ships includes an innovative hull that combines low weight and increased stability thanks to carbon masts equipped with pressure-sensitive optical cables.
What Does TEU Mean?
TEU, which stands for “Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit,” is a standard unit used in maritime transport to measure the capacity of container ships and ports. One TEU corresponds to the volume of one standard 20-foot container, which measures approximately 6.1 meters in length, 2.44 meters in width, and 2.59 meters in height. This standard was introduced to facilitate the handling and transportation of containers worldwide.
Reactions and Partners
Veer is collaborating with several prominent partners, including Bernard Schulte Shipmanagement and FUTURESHIPS ship brokerage. The company is also in discussions with several charter companies regarding clean shipping services expected to start in 2027.
Scott McClure, the lead naval architect for the first design of Veer’s ship, stated: “Utilizing zero-carbon energy sources is the future of maritime transport. Veer is bringing zero-emission vessels to the commercial shipping industry in a commercially viable manner.”
Elliott Tulloch, project team leader for the first design of Veer’s ship, added: “My motivation for building the ‘Design Nº1’ ship is primarily aesthetic. When the sails are set, Veer will be the most beautiful ship on the ocean. Wind and hydrogen energy will propel it forward quietly and smoothly.”
Goals and Future
Veer plans to develop a fleet of vessels in the coming years. The initial design is modular and easily scalable, allowing for future expansion and adaptation to various market needs.
