Special containers can be classified into several different types of containers that are designed and modified for specific purposes or special transportation and storage needs. These include containers such as freezing containers, flat rack containers, open-top containers and any other deviations from the classic storage container. 

However, since all of these containers have their specific classification with us, this section focuses more on completely specific and lesser-known shipping containers, which are made individually, according to specifications and requirements from customers tailored to their needs.

There are also containers for transporting hazardous materials. These containers are made with regard to the transportation of dangerous substances, such as chemicals, toxic materials, or highly flammable goods. They are equipped with special safety measures, such as sealable valves, double walls, and durable surface coatings.

Another specialty is ventilated containers for transporting live animals. This type of container is specially designed for the safe and comfortable transport of live animals, such as cattle, pigs, or poultry. The container is equipped with a special ventilation system that ensures the supply of fresh air and the removal of exhaust gases.

For example, there are insulated containers. These are typically designed to have insulated walls, ceiling, and floor, which allows for a stable temperature inside the container. This is useful for transporting goods that require thermal insulation, such as food, beverages, or pharmaceutical products.

Curtain side container is another type of special container, which is equipped with side tarps instead of solid walls. These tarps are made from durable material and allow for easy and quick handling of goods during loading and unloading. They are used for transporting many types of goods, including packaged goods, building materials, palletized goods, and other irregularly shaped items. They are ideal for goods that require easy access from the side or might be difficult to place in a regular container with solid walls.

Drip tray container, also known as a catchment container, is a special type of container designed to capture and collect hazardous substances leaking from various sources. This type of container is often used in industrial or manufacturing environments where fluid leaks are likely to occur.

Half-height containers, which have half the height of standard shipping containers. These are primarily used for transporting heavy loads, such as stones, construction debris, heavy metals, etc. They are ideal for specific needs, such as transporting heavy goods where stability, high load capacity, and compactness are important.

Flat rack container is another type of special container, which is designed for transporting and handling cargo that does not fit into a standard shipping container due to its size or unusual shape. It is also commonly referred to as a “platform.” The bottom of the flat rack container is solid and flat, making it easy to transport by sea, rail, or road. This container has tilting or fully removable walls.

A frequently used type is also open top container, which has a tarp roof and is used for materials that cannot be loaded through standard doors. These containers facilitate loading using a crane from above the container, especially for large, oversized, and heavy items. Additionally, hard top container, which has a solid removable roof, is essentially the same as a classic open top container.

And last but not least, the bulk container. Bulk container is a special type of container designed for transporting loose, non-standard, and dispersed goods, such as soil, grains, powders, gravel, bulk materials, or pellets. Bulk containers are created to ensure the efficient and safe transport of these materials. They have special openings on the roof of the container and a front tilting discharge outlet.

The most in-demand modification of a shipping container is currently the garage from a shipping container. It can be made from a single container, two, or as shown in the picture below, from 4 pieces of 40’HC shipping containers with total internal dimensions of 113m2.

What special containers can be made?

These can be individual shipping containers from which, for example, electro containers, aggregate containers, water tanks and purifiers, switchboards, control panels, containers for measuring equipment, and other more or less demanding modifications can be made.

The base for such a special container is in some cases a standard storage container (if smaller modifications are required), or it can be entirely custom-made according to specifications. It always depends on the specific order, construction requirements, and static and load-bearing demands.

Special Container Modifications

Examples of additional equipment for special containers, which are also often referred to as “container including modifications” may include these additional modifications and are manufactured according to specific customer requirements:

Container Construction

• cassette cladding instead of profiled sheet metal
• floor, wall, and ceiling insulation with mineral wool, stainless steel, plywood, particleboard, or Fermacell boards
• suspension eyes used inside the container as points for securing equipment during transport

Container Floor

• the floor may also be made of steel sheet, aluminum sheet, or wood from impregnated planks or water-resistant plywood, in addition to the standard options
• to place heavy equipment such as generators, boilers, etc., the floor is reinforced or various securing devices for machines are installed. These include, for example, steel plates with drilled holes or without, rail profiles for sliding and securing the generator, etc.

• frames from profiles for placing distribution boxes with holes for cable routing
• floor as a basin, which can be welded watertight with edges up to a height, serving to catch water, oil, and other substances that may leak out
• galvanized grating placed on the floor with free space underneath, where a walkable floor above the basin is created, etc.

Doors, Windows, and Other Equipment

Container Doors

• The container can be equipped with various types of doors, including handles and locks
• Double-leaf doors, which can be fitted with handles and locks instead of rods
• The doors can be moved to another location
• Four-leaf doors placed on the long wall, for example, for better access to the aggregate
• Removable wall screwed with suspension eyes, for example, for one-time insertion of larger equipment

Windows and Openings

• Fixed, folding, sliding, or retractable windows with standard glazing, safety glass, etc. can be installed in special containers
• Fixed ventilation louvers to prevent rainwater from entering the container, with fixed slats made from galvanized sheet metal
• Movable ventilation louvers controlled by a servomotor or manually
• Framed openings for pulling through pipes, electrical wiring, etc.

Surface Treatment

• Additional spraying, particularly suitable for aggregate containers, which serves as effective sound insulation

Other Equipment

• Electrical installations (CEE connection, circuit breaker box with residual current device, fluorescent lights, sockets, switches) according to various specifications in different countries such as the USA, UK, etc.
• Fans to increase ventilation efficiency
• Galvanized rails in various widths for securing equipment/pipes, etc., from the inside or outside
• Soundproof panels to reduce airflow noise and more
