Transport load wheels are suitable for easy transport of a shipping container. Each wheel is equipped with twist lock locks for a shipping container, so there is no risk of unwanted container slippage during transport.

Our super strong transport wheels for shipping containers have a load capacity of 3,000 kg per 1 wheel. With a durable swivel lock, it allows for quick, easy and secure installation. This allows you to move shipping containers to the desired location without any problems. Adjustable brake attached.

We only sell in sets of 4 wheels. Cannot be purchased individually.

Load wheels are designed for transporting a shipping container to production and storage areas or halls where the entrance is too low for the container and car to pass directly into the hall where the container needs to be unloaded. So they are great for moving containers in enclosed spaces such as production halls.

For a clean passage, it is always necessary to calculate the height of the container + the increase due to the wheels.

Transport Load Wheels for Shipping Container

This dictionary article provides the most detailed possible explanation of the term Transport Load Wheels for Shipping Container” – especially in the category with a load capacity of 3 tons per wheel, designed and constructed for the rapid and safe mobilization of ISO shipping containers. It focuses on technical details, construction, safety, applications and practical recommendations.

What are transport load wheels for shipping containers?

Transport load wheels for shipping containers (English: heavy-duty shipping container wheels, container casters) are highly durable, specially designed wheels for moving standard ISO containers over short distances. Their key feature is a robust construction that allows even very heavy containers to be moved without the need for expensive and complex handling equipment (cranes, reach stackers, tractors, etc.).

The wheels are designed for:

  1. Mobilization of containers in areas, warehouses, production halls, ports, construction sites, events, in the army, etc.
  2. Moving the container in places with limited access, low headroom or where the use of conventional handling equipment would be impractical or impossible.
  3. Set of four wheels (each with a load capacity of 3 tons) – for safe movement of containers up to a weight of approx. 9 tons with a sufficient safety margin.

Synonyms and related terms

Detailed description and principle of operation

Construction and commonly used materials

Each wheel consists of:

Component Description
Fork/Housing Robust welded construction made of high-strength steel. Transfers the load from the twistlock to the wheel.
Wheel Most often 8″ (200 mm) diameter, tread width 3″ (76 mm), often doubled. Material: highly durable polyurethane, nylon or rubber on a steel center.
Bearings High-quality ball or roller bearings for minimal friction and long life.
Swivel mechanism Swivel head with double row ball bearing allows 360° rotation.
Mounting base with Twistlock Top mount for quick and secure locking into the container corner element.
Brake Mechanical foot brake blocking movement and rotation of the fork (so-called total brake).
Color Most often safety yellow or red + black.

Materials:

  • Steel or its alloy (for construction)
  • Polyurethane or hardened industrial plastic
  • Galvanic or powder coating for increased corrosion protection
  • Bearings with dust and water protection

Approximate dimensions:

  • Wheel diameter: 8″ (200 mm)
  • Wheel width: 3″ (76 mm)
  • Side plate thickness: 10 mm
  • Base plate thickness: 14 mm
  • Mounting height (from ground to twistlock): 285 mm (some sources state up to 340 mm depending on model)
  • Weight of one wheel: approx. 25–30 kg (depending on equipment and material)

Key element: Twistlock fastening mechanism

Twistlock is a standardized lock according to ISO 1161, ensuring a firm connection of the wheel to the container corner fitting (corner casting).

How to use: The twistlock is inserted into the opening of the container corner element, rotated 90° by a lever and thus securely locked.

Advantages:

  • Quick assembly and disassembly without the need for tools
  • Guarantees maximum safety and transfer of the total weight of the container to the wheel
  • Twistlock mechanism is universal for all ISO containers (20’, 40’, high-cube, etc.)
  • Some models have the option of locking the twistlock for increased protection against accidental disconnection

Types of wheels and their specific properties

Function/type Properties and benefits
Swivel wheels Allow movement and rotation of the container in all directions (360°).
Doubled wheels Better load distribution, lower rolling resistance, higher stability when turning and passing over unevenness.
Braking mechanism Two of the four wheels have a foot brake – securing the container against movement and rotation.
Directional lock Some models have the option to lock the swivel mechanism, which makes it easier to move over longer distances.
Pneumatic wheels Special version for unpaved surfaces – lower load capacity, but higher ability to overcome terrain obstacles.

Key parameters and specifications: Load capacity 3 tons per wheel

Calculation of required load capacity (Load Capacity)

Recommended calculation:

The total container weight (including cargo) is divided by three – this gives the minimum required load capacity per wheel to ensure safety even with uneven load distribution.

Weight of empty 40′ container approx. 3 800 kg
Weight of cargo approx. 5 000 kg
Total weight 8 800 kg
Minimum load capacity per wheel 2 933 kg

Wheels with a load capacity of 3,000 kg (3 tons) per wheel
are therefore ideal and safe for this case.

Base plate thickness 14 mm
Weight of one wheel approx. 25–30 kg

Installation and safe use guide

Step by step: How to mount wheels on a container

  • Terrain preparation: Ensure a firm, level and clean surface.
  • Lifting the container: Use a suitable jack, forklift with long forks or crane.
  • Inserting the wheels: Insert a wheel with a twistlock under each corner.
  • Locking the twistlock: Turn the lever 90°, check for correct locking.
  • Repeat for all corners: After securing all wheels, slowly lower the container onto the wheels.
  • Check the brakes: Activate the brakes on at least two wheels if you are not moving the container.

Safety rules for moving a container

  • Never enter under a lifted container!
  • Make sure the load in the container is evenly distributed.
  • Handle the container slowly, max. walking speed (4 km/h).
  • Regularly check the condition of the wheels, brakes and twistlock.
  • Do not use the wheels on public roads – they are not homologated for road traffic.
  • Keep your distance from the container when handling it.

Possible accessories and add-ons

Tow Bar

  • Steel bar with eye for connection to tractor or forklift.
  • Attachment to two corner elements of the container.
  • Allows safe movement of the container in the area without damaging the container or vehicle.
