The loss of containers overboard is one of the issues that the shipping industry has to deal with. The World Shipping Council publishes figures on lost containers on a regular basis. On average, approximately 1,382 containers are lost each year, which is less than one thousandth of one percent of the total number of containers transported. In the last three years this average has fallen to 779 containers per year. Container losses can have not only economic but also environmental consequences, which is why shippers are trying to reduce these figures further.

This growth reflects not only the increasing demand for the transport of goods, but also technological advances and improvements in logistics.

Fortunately, most containers that fall overboard quickly sink to the bottom.
