Decommissioned shipping container as storage for a community garden

Decommissioned shipping container, often referred to as “AS IS”, means it is no longer suitable for conversions or major modifications, but its solid construction and spacious interior make it an ideal choice for use as storage. In community gardens such a container finds its application – offering a safe, dry and durable place for storing everything needed for collective gardening.

Possible uses of the container storage

A container in a community garden can serve as a central store for tools, garden equipment or shared supplies. You can use it to store mowers, tillers, shovels, watering cans, substrates, fertilizers, protective gear, as well as communal planting or maintenance materials. The container protects stored items from rain, wind, sun and unauthorized persons.

Who is a storage made from a decommissioned container suitable for?

This type of storage will be appreciated by all gardening communities, school and educational gardens, clubs, and ecological projects that seek an affordable and functional solution. The advantage is that the container does not need structural alterations – just place it in a suitable spot and you can start storing.

Where to place the container in the garden?

Ideally place the container on a flat, reinforced surface – for example on concrete slabs, a gravel area or tiles – to ensure stability and easy access. Choose a location that is easily reachable for all garden members but does not disrupt the aesthetics of the space. A partial covering with greenery or climbing plants can integrate the storage nicely into the environment.

Advantages of using a shipping container in a community garden

  • Immediate availability and simple installation: The container does not require a building permit; no construction is needed – just deliver and place.
  • Security: Robust metal construction protects against theft and vandalism.
  • Durability: Containers are built for transport under extreme conditions, so they last for years without major maintenance.
  • Versatility: Inside you can install shelves, hooks, racks or boxes according to current needs.
  • Weather protection: Items inside are shielded from rain, wind, dust and sun.

What can be stored?

In the container you can store not only garden tools but also building materials, substrates, seedlings, fertilizers, water hoses, wheels, bio‑waste bins, composters or small seating. It is also possible to create a separate area for shared tools, a lockable section for more expensive equipment, or seasonal harvest storage.

How much fits into a 20‑foot container?

A standard 20‑foot container offers an internal volume of around 33 m³ and a length of approximately 6 meters. This means it can hold dozens of larger tools, several mowers, shelves full of small items, and larger bins of material. Such a space easily accommodates all the needs of a medium‑sized community garden.

Recommendations and improvement ideas

  • Interior layout: We recommend using shelves and hooks to maximize space. Separating small and large tools greatly clarifies the storage.
  • Security: To increase safety you can install a quality lock or a security lock box.
  • Ventilation: Even a decommissioned container can be equipped with basic ventilation to prevent moisture buildup.
  • Camouflage: If you want the container to blend into the greenery, paint it green or cover with climbing plants.
  • Social space: Part of the container can be used as a covered area for gatherings or for storing games and communal items.
