Use of a decommissioned storage container for farmers: An ideal solution for storage
Modern agriculture places emphasis on efficiency, safety, and practicality. One proven way to provide quality storage facilities is to use a decommissioned storage container. Although these containers are no longer suitable for conversions or structural modifications, their main strength lies in durability, spaciousness and versatility – ideal qualities for farmers who need to safely store a wide range of items.
What can be stored in a decommissioned container
A decommissioned storage container will find its place on almost any farm. Its main uses include:
- Product storage: Vegetables, fruit, grain, or feed. The container protects the harvest from rain, sun, and pests.
- Material storage: Fertilizers, substrates, seeds, sandbags or bales of hay can be stored safely and kept readily available.
- Storage of equipment and tools: Work tools, garden machinery, wheelbarrows, lawnmowers, chainsaws or spare parts are protected in the container from weather conditions and thieves.
- Storage of maintenance products: Paints, cleaning agents, oils or spare parts remain dry and safe.
- Storage of goods for sale: Surplus products or seasonal goods can be stored in the container ready for quick transport to market.
Thanks to simple interior organization (installation of shelves, racking or hooks), the space can be adapted both for small tools and bulky machines.
Advantages of a decommissioned storage container on a farm
- Safety and protection: The container is made of metal, can be locked and protects the contents from theft, vandalism and adverse weather.
- Mobility and flexibility: It can be moved as needed to a suitable place on the property, where it will serve best at the time.
- Durability and long service life: Even a decommissioned container will last for decades thanks to its robust construction.
- Customizability: Basic interior equipment can be adapted to the specific needs of the farmer.
- Immediate usability: No complex construction work is needed – just place it in a suitable location and start using it.
How much fits into a 20-foot container?
A standard 20-foot container offers an impressive interior space with dimensions of approximately 6 × 2.4 × 2.6 m and a volume of around 33 m³. This means that:

- It can hold a complete set of garden equipment including a lawnmower, sprayer, small tractor and several racks with small tools.
- There is still enough room left for seasonal equipment, backup fuel or supplies for the whole year.
Other possible uses
In addition to classic storage, a decommissioned container can also be used as:
- A temporary shelter for animals in bad weather,
- A shelter for firewood, hay or straw,
- A safe place to store more expensive machines outside the main season.
