Regensburg as a logistics hub
Regensburg lies on the Danube in eastern Bavaria and ranks among the most significant logistics centers of southern Germany. The main credit for this goes to bayernhafen Regensburg – a trimodal port that connects shipping, rail, and road transport in one place.
The port covers an area of more than 180 hectares and houses over 80 container companies. The annual transshipment volume reaches 2.57 million tons of cargo, making it the number one in waterborne cargo handling in all of Bavaria. Thanks to this infrastructure, a large volume of shipping containers flows through Regensburg, and this is precisely where container depots arise, in which traders like HZ Containers have the opportunity to sell shipping containers.
Bayernhafen Regensburg and its importance for container transport
Bayernhafen has two main port basins – Westhafen (820 m in length) and Osthafen (754 m in length) – with a total quay wall length of 5.2 km. The port offers transshipment from ship to train and truck, its own container terminal, and more than 34 km of rail tracks. For Czech customers, the connection to the Deutsche Bahn rail network is also significant, from which containers can be dispatched further across Europe.
Location advantages for Czech customers
From the Czech Republic, Regensburg is one of the most accessible German container depots. From Plzeň you can get here in approximately 1.5 to 2 hours via the A3 motorway, which leads directly to the southern edge of the city. The container depot is located in an industrial zone within the port area or in its immediate vicinity, so the turn from the motorway to the loading ramp takes only a few minutes.
Container depot in Regensburg – where exactly to find the containers
A container depot is a specialized area where shipping containers are stored, transshipped, and maintained. HZ Containers does not own its own depots – we have the opportunity to sell shipping containers in these depots.
Description of how a container depot operates
The depot functions as a secured storage space with continuous surveillance. Each container has its identification number and precisely recorded position. Depot staff perform basic handling – moving containers using heavy forklifts (reach stackers) or gantry cranes. Depot services typically also include minor repairs, cleaning, and preparation of the container before release.
| Depot service | What it includes |
|---|---|
| Storage | Placement of the container on a secured plot, position records |
| Handling | Moving the container from its position to the loading ramp |
| Loading | Loading the container onto the customer’s truck using a reach stacker |
| Outgoing inspection | Visual inspection of the container’s condition before release |
What to expect from the depot when picking up
When arriving at the depot, first report to the gatehouse or dispatch. Staff will direct you to the right place, from where a reach stacker will pick up the container and move it onto your vehicle. The entire loading process usually takes 10–20 minutes. The actual pickup is conditional upon completion of all administrative steps – the order must be paid and the date confirmed. Without a valid proof of purchase, the depot will not release the container.
An empty 20-foot container weighs approximately 2,200 kg and a 40-foot around 3,700 kg. A reach stacker – a heavy forklift available at every container depot – is required for loading. A passenger car or a regular trailer behind a passenger car is not sufficient for transporting a container. If you are unsure what vehicle to order, contact us – we will advise you on choosing a carrier in the region.
What used shipping containers we offer
The range of used shipping containers includes several basic sizes and types. Specific stock availability changes continuously.
Size overview – 10ft, 20ft, 40ft and High Cube
The following table summarizes the basic dimensions of the most commonly sold used shipping containers. The values given correspond to the ISO 668 standard.
| Type | External length (m) | External width (m) | External height (m) | Internal length (m) | Internal width (m) | Internal height (m) | Payload (kg) | Volume (m³) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10ft | 3.05 | 2.44 | 2.59 | 2.84 | 2.35 | 2.39 | ~10,000 | 15.9 |
| 20ft standard | 6.06 | 2.44 | 2.59 | 5.90 | 2.35 | 2.39 | ~28,000 | 33.1 |
| 40ft standard | 12.19 | 2.44 | 2.59 | 12.03 | 2.35 | 2.39 | ~28,000 | 67.5 |
| 40ft High Cube | 12.19 | 2.44 | 2.90 | 12.03 | 2.35 | 2.70 | ~28,000 | 76.3 |
10-foot containers are suitable for storing smaller amounts of material on a construction site or as a mobile workshop. A 20-foot container is the most versatile choice – it fits on most construction sites, is easy to transport, and offers enough space for ordinary storage needs. A 40-foot container provides double the volume at a price only slightly higher than that of a 20-foot.
The High Cube (HC) version offers 30 cm more in height. Those 30 cm can be decisive if you need to store taller items, build a living space from the container with quality floor and ceiling insulation, or create a two-story superstructure.
Special types – reefer, open top, side door
In addition to standard closed boxes, depending on current stock, we also offer special types:
- Reefer containers – equipped with a cooling unit or at least preserved insulation. Suitable for storing food, pharmaceuticals, or anything that requires a stable temperature. Even without a functional unit, it serves as an excellently insulated storage.
- Open Top – a container with an openable roof (tarpaulin or removable rigid panel). Ideal for top loading – bulk materials, oversized items, machinery.
- Side Door / Open Side – a container with side doors along the entire length. Allows access to the entire contents without having to clear from the front doors.
Quality of used containers – Cargo Worthy, WWT and other categories
When buying a used shipping container, you will come across several abbreviations and quality designations. There is no single global standard for “labeling” used containers, but the market has created its own generally recognized categories.
What does Cargo Worthy (CW) mean?
Cargo Worthy – literally “fit for cargo” – is a container that has passed inspection under the international CSC agreement and is capable of safe maritime transport. This means its construction is sound, the floor is intact, the doors seal, and the whole unit can be stacked on the deck of a ship without risk. These containers typically concern an age of 7–12 years. They are visibly used – they bear scratches, abrasions, occasional light corrosion – but all load-bearing parts are in order.
Wind & Water Tight (WWT) – why it is enough for storage
Wind & Water Tight means that the container is sealed against wind and water. It will not let through rain, snow, or dust. Unlike CW, however, it does not have to meet maritime transport requirements – it may, for example, have minor deformations of corner posts that prevent safe stacking on a ship. For ground storage, WWT is entirely sufficient and represents the best ratio of price to utility value. Most of our customers buy exactly this category.
The difference between IICL, CW, WWT and AS-IS
| Category | Approximate age | Condition | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| IICL | 3–5 years | Very good, meets IICL-6 standard, minimal wear | Maritime transport, leasing, demanding conversions |
| Cargo Worthy (CW) | 7–12 years | Structurally sound, visible signs of use | Maritime transport, storage, conversions |
| Wind & Water Tight (WWT) | 10–15 years | Impermeable to water and wind, cosmetic defects | Storage, site cabins, workshops |
| AS-IS | Various | Sold “as is”, without tightness guarantee | Cheap storage without requirements, disassembly for material |
The AS-IS category means that you buy the container exactly in the condition it currently stands in at the depot. For the lowest price, you get a functional box that may or may not be watertight. It is suitable for storing material resistant to weather conditions – construction debris, metal scrap, machinery under a tarpaulin.
Prices of used shipping containers – what affects the price and what to watch out for
The price of a used shipping container depends on several factors. No price list is universal, and prices of the same container type can differ between sellers by up to tens of percent.
Main factors affecting the price
Quality is the most significant factor – an IICL container costs roughly 40–70% more than a WWT of the same size. Size also plays a role (10ft tends to be more expensive per unit of volume because it is rarer), type (High Cube, reefer, or special containers cost more than a standard box), and age. The last factor is location – a container in the port of Hamburg will be cheaper than an identical piece in Regensburg, because transport from the port to the inland has already taken place and its costs are reflected in the price.
Why do prices differ between sellers?
Differences in prices between individual sellers stem mainly from their business model. Brick-and-mortar container companies with their own warehouses, showrooms, and sales spaces logically pass overhead costs into every container. HZ Containers operates as a seller. This allows us to offer customers lower prices while maintaining full transparency – we photograph and describe every container according to its actual condition before sale.
How the purchase of a used container from the Regensburg depot works step by step
Order and reservation
Browse the current offering of used shipping containers. Each listing contains photos of the actual container, quality designation, dimensions, and price. Select the container that meets your needs and place it in the cart. Payment is made by bank transfer.
Pickup at the depot – practical information
Once payment is credited, you will receive a confirmation email with the exact depot address, contact for the staff, and the identification number of your container. The loading process itself is quick, but we recommend allowing a buffer of 30–45 minutes for the entire visit – from arrival through administration to departure with the container.
What to prepare before the trip
Have your release with you – a unique code for picking up the container from the depot. Check the depot’s opening hours – most depots in Regensburg operate Monday to Friday, approximately from 7:00 to 17:00. Before leaving the depot, check the condition of the container – open the doors, inspect the floor, sealing, and roof. If you discover a defect that does not match the description in the listing, resolve it immediately with the depot staff or contact our customer service.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a used and a new shipping container?
A new container has made at most one trip from the manufacturing plant (typically from China), is 0–2 years old, free of corrosion, and in top condition. A used container is 5–15 years old, with signs of normal wear, but still fully functional. For storage on a plot, a used container is usually the more advantageous choice due to its lower price.
How do I arrange transport of the container from the depot?
The buyer arranges transport themselves. You need a truck with a flatbed, low-loader, or container chassis.
How long does it take before I can pick up the container?
After payment is credited, the container is usually ready for pickup within 5–7 working days. Agree on the exact date directly with the depot staff based on the contact details in the confirmation email.
Are the containers in Regensburg also suitable for conversion into housing?
We also offer higher-quality containers (IICL, Cargo Worthy) that are suitable for construction modifications and conversions into residential units, offices, or mobile shops. For residential purposes, we recommend newer pieces with an intact floor and minimal corrosion. The High Cube variant also provides a more comfortable clear height after insulation.
How do I know that a container is watertight?
Watertightness (designation WWT – Wind & Water Tight) guarantees that the container will not let through water or wind. Before taking delivery, we still recommend opening the doors and checking the condition of the sealing, floor, and ceiling from the inside. If you do not find wet stains, mold, or visible openings in the roof inside, the container is in order. For the WWT category, we guarantee this property.
What if the container I want is not currently in stock in Regensburg?
The offering changes continuously according to current stock. If the type you are looking for is not available, look at our other depots in Germany or the Czech Republic – you will find a list on the main page of our website. You can also contact us and we will help you find a suitable alternative, or we will notify you when the requested type arrives.
Can I rent a container?
HZ Containers specializes exclusively in the sale of shipping containers – we do not offer rental.
