Budapest Depot – Where It Is Located and How It Works

Budapest is one of the most important logistics hubs in Central Europe. It lies on the Danube, which has historically served as a natural transport artery connecting Western and Eastern Europe. The city is crossed by several key highways – M0 (ring road), M1 (direction Vienna/Bratislava), M5 (direction Belgrade/Szeged), M7 (direction Balaton/Zagreb) – and has an extensive railway network. It is precisely this exceptional location that makes Budapest an ideal place for a container depot.

Several large terminals operate in Budapest. The most significant is the MAHART Container Center in the Csepel district, the only trimodal container terminal in Hungary. It has an area of over 127,000 m², a capacity of 7,200 TEU, a railway siding, and its own waterfront. Other depots can be found, for example, in the Szigetszentmiklós area or near Budapest Airport. This infrastructure ensures that shipping containers are readily available here and handling is professional.

What Is a Container Depot and Why Is It Important for You

A container depot is a secured storage facility where shipping containers are stored, inspected, and prepared for further use. Handling at the depot is carried out using heavy equipment – reachstackers, which can safely move even a 40-foot container. A quality depot has 24-hour security, a camera system, and a paved surface that prevents container damage from moisture coming from the ground.

HZ-Containers does not own the depot in Budapest – we offer the containers there for sale based on a long-term partnership. This allows us to focus on what we do best: selecting quality used shipping containers and selling them at fair prices. For you as a customer, this means you buy from a container specialist, while the actual storage takes place in a professional, fully equipped facility.

Types and Dimensions of Used Shipping Containers

The range of used shipping containers from the Budapest depot covers all common and special types of shipping containers. Below you will find an overview of individual categories, their dimensions, and typical uses.

Most Common Container Dimensions

The most frequently sold used shipping containers fall into three basic sizes. Each is suitable for a different purpose.

Container typeExternal dimensions (L × W × H)Internal volumeLoad capacitySuitable use
10ft (3 m)3.05 × 2.44 × 2.59 m~15 m³~10,000 kgSmall storage, garden house, mini workshop
20ft (6 m)6.06 × 2.44 × 2.59 m~33 m³~28,000 kgMaterial storage, construction base, transport
40ft (12 m)12.19 × 2.44 × 2.59 m~67 m³~28,000 kgLarge-capacity storage, modular buildings
40ft HC12.19 × 2.44 × 2.90 m~76 m³~28,000 kgHigher storage space, residential conversions

Used 10-foot containers (also referred to as used mini containers or used small containers) are ideal for small construction projects and storage on smaller plots. In contrast, used 40-foot containers provide maximum space and often serve as the basis for residential containers or storage containers.

Special Container Types

In addition to dry storage containers, we also offer specialized variants:

Used refrigerated containers (reefer) – these containers have an integrated cooling unit and stronger insulation in the walls, floor, and ceiling. They are used not only for transporting food but also, thanks to their excellent insulation, as a basis for residential conversions or sales stands. Prices of used refrigerated containers are typically higher than for dry versions, but they reflect the added value in the form of insulation.

Open Top containers – instead of a fixed roof, they have a removable tarpaulin. They are suitable for transporting oversized cargo that does not fit into a standard container.

Flat Rack containers – they offer foldable end walls without sides and a roof. They are used for transporting heavy equipment, pipes, and machinery.

Used construction containers – robust design with fire protection modifications, often equipped with shelves and ventilation.

Which Container to Choose for Your Needs

The choice depends on what you expect from the container. For classic storage, a dry used 20-foot container (or used 6-meter container, as it is commonly called) is sufficient. If you plan to live or work in it, go for an insulated reefer or used residential containers. Used office containers often already come with windows, doors, and basic electrical installations. For gastronomy, used bar containers are also available.

Customers are showing growing interest in luxury containers – these are custom-tailored used residential containers with above-standard equipment, large windows, and design features. For specific requirements, there are also used containers with a bathroom – so-called sanitary units, or used accommodation containers for short-term living on construction sites.

How to Recognize a Quality Used Shipping Container

When buying a used shipping container, quality is the most important parameter. Price does play a role, but if you buy a container in poor condition, you will end up paying more for repairs.

Cargo Worthy (CW) Category

Containers classified as Cargo Worthy (CW) still meet the standards for maritime transport. This means that:

  • They are watertight – no water gets in
  • They have a solid construction without significant corrosion
  • The doors are functional and seal properly
  • The floor is solid, without holes or rotten spots
  • They have a valid CSC plate

CW quality is the highest standard among used shipping containers. Containers from our depot in Budapest are in the vast majority precisely the CW category.

One level below are decommissioned shipping containers – these no longer meet the conditions for maritime transport, but can still serve as solid storage. The lowest category consists of containers sold “as-is,” where repairs must be expected.

What You Can Learn from the CSC Plate

Every shipping container has a CSC plate (Convention for Safe Containers) attached to the doors. It contains the following information:

  • Manufacturer and serial number – can be used to trace the age of the container
  • Date of manufacture – a key piece of data for estimating service life
  • Maximum gross weight – total load capacity
  • Tare weightweight of the empty container
  • Date of the last periodic inspection – whether the certification is still valid

How the Container Inspection Before Purchase Works

Before we list a container for sale, it undergoes a visual inspection. We focus on critical areas: corners and edges (where corrosion most often begins), door seals, the floor (especially in the corners), the roof, and the overall rigidity of the structure. If you buy from our depot in Budapest, you can inspect the container in person before paying – just arrange an appointment.

How the Purchase and Pickup of a Container from the Budapest Depot Works

Buying a used container is a straightforward process, divided into several steps.

Step by Step: From Order to Pickup

  1. Choose a container – you can find the current offer directly on this page (we add it manually so you can see exactly the pieces currently available at the depot).
  2. Place your order – via the web form or by phone. You will receive a confirmation with the exact specification and price.
  3. Pay – payment is made by bank transfer. Once the amount is credited, we issue an invoice.
  4. Arrange a pickup date – contact us and agree on a day and time for pickup.
  5. Arrange transport – the removal of the container from the depot is up to you. The depot has a reachstacker that will load the container onto your vehicle.

How to Arrange Container Transport

For transporting used shipping containers from Budapest to the Czech Republic or Slovakia, you have several options. The simplest is to order a truck with a hydraulic arm (“HRC”), which loads and unloads the container at the destination without the need for additional equipment. Another option is a lowboy or flatbed with a crane.

The distance Budapest–Brno is approximately 330 km, Budapest–Bratislava about 200 km. The transport price depends on the kilometers and type of transport – we recommend requesting quotes from several carriers and comparing offers. A container weighing 2–4 tons (empty 20ft or 40ft) can be handled by most standard truck combinations.

What You Will Need for Pickup

Prepare for pickup:

  • A copy of the invoice or order
  • Proof of identity
  • Contact for the person arranging transport (driver name, license plate)
  • Confirmed loading date from the depot

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How Do I Know a Used Container Is in Good Condition?

Check that it has a valid CSC plate on the doors, door tightness (inspect the rubber seals), the condition of the floor (especially in the corners and at the doors), the absence of through-holes in the roof and walls, and the extent of corrosion on the corners. Containers from our depot go through inspection, so only pieces in the Cargo Worthy category make it into the offer.

Do I Need Any Special Equipment to Pick Up a Container from the Depot?

No. The depot has a reachstacker that will load the container onto your truck or lowboy. You only need to provide a suitable transport vehicle. For a 20-foot container, a vehicle with a load capacity of approximately 3 tons is sufficient; for a 40-foot container, count on approximately 4 tons.

How Long Does It Take Before I Can Take the Container from Budapest?

After completing the order and crediting the payment, the container is usually ready for pickup within 5-7 days. We will agree on a specific loading date individually according to your options and the depot’s operating hours.

Are Containers from the Budapest Depot Also Suitable for Living?

Standard dry CW containers are suitable as a basis for a residential conversion, but by themselves they require additional insulation, installations, and modifications. If you plan to live in one, we recommend used refrigerated containers, which already have strong insulation, or used residential containers, which are already adapted for living.

What Is the Difference Between a Used CW Container and a Decommissioned Container?

A CW (Cargo Worthy) container is still suitable for maritime transport – it is watertight, structurally sound, and has a valid CSC plate. A decommissioned container no longer has maritime certification and may have minor leaks or surface corrosion. For storage on land, however, a decommissioned container can still be fully sufficient.

Can a Container Be Ordered with Modifications (Doors, Windows, Insulation)?

HZ-Containers sells containers in their original condition. Modifications – such as the installation of windows, doors, gates, insulation, or electrical installations – are arranged by the customer themselves.

How Does the Payment for the Container Work and What Documents Will I Receive?

Payment is made by bank transfer based on the issued invoice. After the payment is credited, we issue the final tax document (invoice) and release, which also serve as the basis for container pickup at the depot. You will also receive a specification of the container with its identification number.
