Why buy decommissioned shipping containers from the Bonn depot
Bonn as a logistics hub on the Rhine
Bonner Hafen (Bonn port) is located at river kilometer 658 and is one of the key multimodal terminals on the Rhine. It is operated by Bonner Hafenbetriebe GmbH (BHB) – a consortium of Am Zehnhoff-Söns GmbH and Stadtwerke Bonn. The terminal has an area of 65,000 m², four ship berths for vessels 135 meters in length, and a capacity of over 4,500 TEU for storing empty containers.
Daily, barges depart from here to the ports of Rotterdam, Antwerp, and Amsterdam – with more than 50 connections per week. More than 85% of containers are transported by combined transport (water/rail/road), making Bonn one of the busiest inland ports in Germany.

Standard storage containers 10′, 20′ and 40′

You can use them as a mobile warehouse on a construction site, in an industrial area, for storing garden equipment, furniture, materials, and seasonal equipment. Containers with a length of 20 ft (approx. 6 m) and 40 ft (approx. 12 m) make up the vast majority of the offer. Smaller 10 ft containers (3 m) are ideal for limited spaces or as a complement to a larger container.
Special types – refrigerated, construction, office and residential containers
In addition to standard storage containers, we also offer special types at the Bonn depot:
- Refrigerated containers (reefer) – used for transporting temperature-controlled goods. Once retired from transport, they serve as an insulated warehouse or the basis for a cooled operation.
- Construction containers – robust design, often equipped with shelves, racks, or additional security. Ideal for construction companies.
- Office containers – already equipped with insulation, electrical installation, windows, and doors. Can be used as a site office or facilities.
- Residential containers – adapted for short-term and long-term living, often with sanitary facilities.
The availability of special types at the Bonn depot changes frequently. If you are looking for a specific type, contact us – we will verify the current status.
Quality and condition of decommissioned shipping containers – what to watch out for
What categories of condition of decommissioned containers do we distinguish?
In the field of shipping container sales, standardized quality categories are used. Here are the main ones:
- IICL – containers meeting the standards of the Institute of International Container Lessors. This is the highest quality category, suitable for further marine transport.
- Cargo Worthy (CW) – the container is suitable for cargo transport. It is sealed, the doors work, the floor is intact. It is an excellent choice for storage purposes.
- Wind and Water Tight (WWT) – the container is sealed against wind and water, but it does not have to meet stricter standards for marine transport. It is fully sufficient for regular storage.
- AS IS – the container is sold in its current condition. It may have visible damage, rust, leaks. The price is the lowest, but repairs must be expected.
At the Bonn depot, we standardly offer containers in Cargo Worthy and Wind and Water Tight qualities.
