What is a Decommissioned Steel Container with iC 81 Certification?

This steel container, often referred to as an “Iron box” or “Steel transport cabinet”, is a decommissioned transport container type 45G1 with a height of 2.6 m (8’6″), which has undergone strict certification by Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) under the designation iC 81. Its robust construction, originally designed for demanding railway and maritime transport conditions, guarantees high resistance to external influences, safety of stored items, and long service life.

Container Equipment – Why is it so Advantageous?

This particular container features a four-rod opening system, which means its iron doors can be safely and conveniently opened even with frequent use. Another significant advantage is two ventilation ducts (Air Vents) – each located on one of the long side walls. These ventilation grilles ensure optimal air circulation inside the container, preventing condensation and mold growth, which is crucial when storing wood or other moisture-sensitive materials.

Who is This Container Suitable For?

A decommissioned steel container with this equipment is an ideal choice for anyone looking for practical, secure, and durable storage space. It is most commonly used by:

  • Owners of family homes and cottages
  • Companies and small entrepreneurs in forestry and woodworking
  • Construction companies and technical services
  • Farmers and agricultural workers
  • Gardeners and nursery operators

Due to its properties, this type of container is particularly popular as a firewood storage facility, but its use is much broader.

Firewood Storage – How to Use the Container?

Proper storage of firewood is crucial for its quality and heating value. Thanks to the robust steel construction and ventilation ducts, this container is an excellent solution for anyone who needs to safely and efficiently store:

  • Split firewood
  • Logs
  • Wood briquettes
  • Wood pellets
  • Charcoal and other solid fuels

Ventilation grilles help maintain constant air exchange, so wood dries better and is protected from rot or mold. Four-rod opening also allows easy access for wood handling, whether you need to store new supplies or remove fuel for heating.

What Fits in a 20-Foot Container?

A standard 20-foot container offers a volume of up to 33 m³, which means you can comfortably store:

  • Up to 25–30 cubic meters of split wood (depending on stacking method)
  • Dozens of bags of wood pellets or briquettes
  • Pallets with bagged charcoal or other solid fuels

Thanks to high load capacity and stable construction, you can use the container for heavier materials without worrying about floor or wall damage.

Other Ideas for Using the Container When Storing Wood

In addition to simple firewood storage, you can use the container in other ways:

  • Separation of different types of wood (hardwood, softwood, logs, briquettes)
  • Locked wood storage, protected from theft
  • Creating a simple shelving system for better organization
  • Storage of tools and accessories needed for splitting or handling wood

The steel container can be placed in a garden, yard, or forest – thanks to its mobility, you can easily move it when needed.

Why Choose This Type of Container?

A decommissioned steel container with four-rod opening and ventilation grilles represents a reliable and economical choice for anyone looking for secure and dry storage space for firewood and other materials. Despite being unsuitable for renovations or structural modifications, its original robustness and equipment make it an ideal choice for long-term and worry-free use.
