Decommissioned shipping container as storage next to garden beds
If you are looking for an efficient and secure way to store garden tools, machinery or seasonal supplies right next to your beds, a decommissioned shipping container is an excellent choice. Although it is no longer suitable for extensive structural modifications or conversions, its robust construction and spaciousness still offer a number of advantages that every gardener and small plot owner will appreciate.
Ways to use the container in the garden
A decommissioned shipping container can be used as:
- Storage for garden tools – lawnmowers, rakes, hoes, wheelbarrows and other tools will be safe here and always at hand.
- Storage for substrates and fertilisers – bags of soil, compost or fertilisers can be stored here in the dry and protected from rain.
- Space for garden machinery – chainsaws, brushcutters, power tools, pumps or irrigation systems can be safely locked up here.
- Seasonal storage – flowerpots, decorations, garden furniture or textiles will remain protected from the elements out of season.
Who a container storage is suitable for
This type of storage is appreciated by:
- Gardeners with a larger area of beds who need to have tools and materials always at hand.
- Owners of family houses with larger gardens or yards.
- Cottage and chalet owners who want to secure their equipment even during longer absences.
- Small farms looking for simple and inexpensive storage space without the need for building works.
Where a container store is best placed
It is ideal to place the container on a flat surface close to the beds so that storage and handling are as easy as possible. You can place it on concrete pads, a grassed area or a stabilised gravel base. Thanks to its dimensions (for example, a 20-foot container is approximately 6 metres long) it will fit even on smaller plots while still offering a volume of up to 33 m³.
Advantages of a container next to garden beds
- Security – the robust steel construction protects against thieves and vandals.
- Durability – the container is designed for extreme conditions, withstanding rain, snow, wind and strong sun.
- Mobility – if necessary, the container can be moved to another location.
- Speed and simplicity – no building permit or complex construction is required.
- Versatility – the interior can be divided using shelving systems or hanging rails.
What can be stored and how much fits into a 20-foot container
In a standard 20-foot container (approx. 6 × 2.4 × 2.6 m) you can comfortably store:
- Several lawnmowers and garden carts
- A complete set of garden tools and accessories
- Bags of soil, sand, gravel
- Garden furniture and a barbecue
- Dozens of plastic boxes with small materials and decorations
- Larger machinery or building materials
The capacity is really large – a single container can hold most of the equipment of an average household or a small gardening business.
Recommendations and ideas for use
- Create a simple shelving system from wooden battens and shelves for clear organisation of tools.
- Attach hooks to the inside of the doors to hang small tools.
- Use plastic boxes and sealable containers to store small items, seeds or fertilisers.
- If you are concerned about moisture, place pallets on the floor or use dehumidifiers.
- Ensure ventilation, for example with a simple vent opening, so that moisture does not accumulate inside.
Why choose a container store right next to the beds
The advantage of a decommissioned shipping container is its long service life and minimal maintenance requirements. By placing it directly next to your beds, you will significantly simplify your work – everything you need will be at hand, in the dry and safe. In addition, there is no need to build new shelters or garden sheds, which saves time and money.
If you want to maximise the efficiency of garden care and be sure that your equipment is protected, a decommissioned shipping container is the ideal solution for storage next to your beds.
