Dimensions, load capacity and volume of a 20-foot container
A 20-foot shipping container is a standardized transport and storage module. Its external dimensions are approximately 6.06 meters in length, 2.44 meters in width and 2.59 meters in height. The interior space is slightly smaller, but still generous – length 5.90 meters, width 2.35 meters and height 2.39 meters. The total internal volume reaches roughly 33.2 cubic meters, which provides plenty of room to store a wide variety of equipment. The container’s load capacity is up to around 28 tons, so it can easily carry even heavy alloys, molds or machine components. Of course, given that this is a retired unit in AS IS 2 quality, you should expect minor signs of wear, which in no way reduce its functionality for storage purposes. Dimensions are approximate and may always vary slightly depending on the manufacturer.
Use of an old shipping container for storage in alloy casting
An old decommissioned shipping container has long served purposes beyond just transporting goods across oceans. After years of faithful service, it becomes an invaluable helper in production operations, especially where there is a need to safely and clearly store everything required for alloy casting. While modern trends often look for residential units or cafés in containers, a retired unit is no longer ideal for conversions and structural modifications – but its strength and weather resistance make it a perfect storage space precisely for the foundry industry. No complicated modifications, just a reliable box that will protect your property from rain, frost and unauthorized access.
Why choose an old container for storage in alloy casting
A decommissioned shipping container offers a number of benefits that any foundry or workshop dealing with alloy casting will appreciate. First and foremost, it is an immediately available and cost-effective solution – without the need to build brick warehouses or purchase expensive modular systems. A container is a massive steel box that withstands extreme weather conditions, and thanks to its lockable doors, it provides a high level of security against theft. Its mobility is another great advantage: it can be easily moved using a crane or a truck directly to the melting site, minimizing handling distances. And because it is a retired unit, its acquisition is gentle on the budget and at the same time ecological – you are giving a second life to material that would otherwise lie idle.
What can be stored in the container
A container for alloy casting provides a universal space where you can store practically anything related to foundry operations. Its internal volume and load capacity allow systematic organization, whether using shelving, racks, or loosely stored supplies. The following categories show how wide a range of storage options it offers.
Product storage
Finished alloy castings – whether aluminum, zinc, brass or bronze products – require a dry and safe place where there is no risk of corrosion or mechanical damage. The container is ideal for storing final products ready for shipment. You can sort them by alloy type, dimensions or orders, and thanks to the clear arrangement, you will save time when picking. Products will remain protected from moisture, which could damage the surface finish, and from dirt from the operation.
Component storage
Every foundry handles a large number of smaller components – from cores and molds through casting gates to machine auxiliary parts. The container allows them to be clearly sorted into compartments or boxes, so you always have at hand what you currently need. Time-consuming searching in the workshop is eliminated and the risk of losses or mix-ups is reduced. The components are also isolated from dust and temperature fluctuations, which extends their service life.
Material storage
Raw materials for alloy casting – such as aluminum, copper, zinc and tin ingots, as well as additives, fluxes and abrasives – often take up a lot of space and require a dry environment. The container provides plenty of space for pallet storage of heavy metal blocks and bagged bulk mixtures. All materials will stay dry, so you avoid damage from moisture or oxidation. Thanks to a load capacity of up to 28 tons in a 20-foot container, you don’t have to worry about large volumes either.
Equipment storage
Foundry equipment – from melting furnaces, crucibles and casting ladles to protective gear such as shields, gloves and aprons – needs its own organized space. In the container you can set aside separate zones for individual types of equipment, streamlining work processes. All equipment is protected from mechanical damage and remains clean, ready for immediate use.
Tool storage
Hand and power tools, measuring instruments, grinders, drills, as well as specialized foundry tools – all of this deserves safe storage. The container offers the option of installing wall panels with hooks or magnetic strips (without compromising the structure), so tools hang visibly and within reach. A locked container also protects expensive equipment from theft.
Maintenance storage
Alloy casting operations cannot do without regular maintenance of machines and equipment. Spare parts, lubricants, cleaning agents, filters, seals and other consumable materials for maintenance will find a stable and dry place in the container. They can be organized by frequency of use or type of machine, reducing downtime during repairs. Thanks to the durable floor, you don’t have to worry about oil leaks – the container is easy to clean.
Storage for employees
Foundry employees will appreciate having their own lockable space for personal belongings – work clothes, footwear, helmets, but also small items such as bottles of drink or snacks. By setting aside part of the container for these purposes, you will increase comfort and order in the workplace. Things are locked and protected from contamination from production, contributing to better work morale.
Storage of items for sale
If your foundry sells surplus material, retired tools or even finished products directly from the warehouse, the container can function as a dispatch point. Goods are clearly arranged and the customer can browse them without entering the production area. The locked container also protects the items for sale from theft.
How much fits in a 20-foot container
The most commonly used type for storage is a 20-foot container (dimensions approximately 6.06 × 2.44 × 2.59 meters). Its internal volume is roughly 33 cubic meters and the load capacity is around 28 tons. What does that mean in practice?
- Such a space can hold, for example, 10 standard euro pallets with alloy ingots, representing up to 10 tons of material.
- You can place hundreds of smaller castings arranged on racks inside – with a three-tier shelving system you gain up to 60 square meters of storage area.
- A medium-sized melting furnace with all its accessories and fuel supply takes up only a fraction of the space, leaving room for additional equipment.
- Storing tools and small components in mobile boxes allows you to use every centimeter while maintaining easy access.
Thanks to the standardized dimensions, the container can easily be equipped with an internal shelving system without compromising its structure – just install free-standing shelves or use loose storage bins. All without the need for drilling or welding, which is ideal precisely for a retired unit that you no longer want to modify further.
Organization options and inspiration
Even without structural modifications, the container interior can be cleverly organized. Use magnetic holders, free-standing shelving systems or hanging pockets on the doors. For easy movement inside, you can lay an anti-slip floor in the container and install LED lighting powered by battery or via a solar panel. In summer, passive ventilation through the original vents helps, while in winter it is enough to store materials sensitive to frost in insulated boxes. You can place the container on a leveled gravel base, so there is no need for complicated foundation work.
An old decommissioned shipping container is a surprisingly clever solution for storing everything you need for alloy casting. Its durability, security and mobility make it an invaluable helper that will streamline your operations and save money. Whether you need to store tons of raw material, finished products, or just work tools, the container offers plenty of space and flexibility. Make the most of its potential – without building modifications, but with maximum benefit.
