Decommissioned 20-foot (approx. 6 metres) shipping containers in “AS IS 10” condition are a budget-friendly yet very durable option for material storage. Although they are no longer suitable for conversions and major structural modifications, their robust construction and resistance to weather conditions remain intact. Transport to Roztoky and elsewhere in the Czech Republic is free once the conditions below are met!

Basic information and dimensions of a 20-foot container

Decommissioned shipping containers sized 20 feet (approx. 6 metres) in AS IS 10 condition are an excellent choice for anyone looking for a robust, secure and at the same time cost-effective storage solution. The standard dimensions of a 20-foot container are approximately 6.06 m in length, 2.44 m in width and 2.59 m in height. The usable volume is around 33 m³ and the payload capacity is up to 28 tonnes. The dimensions are approximate and may vary slightly depending on the manufacturer.

Although these containers have already been retired from sea transport, they still provide high structural strength and resistance to weather conditions.

Decommissioned shipping container as storage in orchards

Decommissioned shipping containers, also referred to as “AS IS”, are an efficient and affordable solution for storage in orchards. Although they are no longer suitable for larger conversions or structural interventions, they still offer a number of advantages that every orchard owner, farmer or small orchard holder will appreciate. Thanks to their robust construction, resistance to weather and mobility, they are an ideal choice for storage directly in the field.

Ways to use a container store in orchards

A decommissioned shipping container works perfectly as a simple, secure and dry storage space right among the trees. It can be used to store garden machinery, tools, sprayers, fertilisers, water barrels, protective equipment and packing materials. During harvest time it can be used for temporary storage of crates of fruit before transport, trays or pallets. Thanks to lockable doors, it protects stored materials from bad weather, dust and unwanted visitors.

Who the container store is suitable for

A store made from a decommissioned container will be especially appreciated by small and medium-sized fruit growers, gardeners, orchard owners and farmers who need flexible and quickly available space for seasonal as well as year-round storage. It is also useful in community orchards, eco-farms or for hobby growers. It is suitable both for family orchards and for larger businesses that need several storage points spread directly across the site.

Where a container store fits in an orchard

Thanks to its construction, the container can be placed almost anywhere – at the edge of the orchard, in the middle of the planting, by machinery parking areas or by the access road for easy loading and unloading. Its mobility makes it easy to move it to another place if needed. Ideally it should be placed on a solid base such as gravel, paving slabs or concrete pads, which will ensure a long service life and easy access.

Advantages of a decommissioned container as storage

  • Durability and security – the robust steel structure protects the contents against wind, rain and moisture.
  • Mobility – it can be moved to another location at any time as needed.
  • Quick installation – no lengthy construction of a masonry building is required.
  • Versatility – can be used for various types of materials and tools.
  • Low maintenance requirements – no complex repairs or coatings needed, only basic checks of tightness and safety.
  • Protection against theft – lockable storage with the possibility of additional security.

What can be stored in the container

In a container store you can safely store:

  • garden and agricultural machinery (lawn mowers, small tractors, sprayers),
  • hand tools (hoes, rakes, saws, ladders),
  • trays, boxes and pallets with fruit,
  • fertilisers, substrates, sprays and protective nets,
  • packaging material, sacks, foils,
  • workwear, gloves and other equipment.

However, we do not recommend long-term storage of food for direct consumption in the container, as a decommissioned container may not be completely airtight. For short-term fruit storage (e.g. during harvest), however, it is an ideal solution.

How much fits into a 20-foot container

The most commonly used is the 20-foot container with internal dimensions of approx. 5.9 m length, 2.35 m width and 2.39 m height. It offers a volume of approximately 33 m³ and a payload capacity of up to 28 tonnes (depending on condition). You can comfortably store dozens of boxes of fruit, several pieces of machinery or complete seasonal equipment for a small to medium-sized orchard.

Recommendations and ideas for better use of storage in an orchard

  • Equip the container with shelves, hooks or boxes for clear organisation of items.
  • For a better microclimate, we recommend ventilation grilles or basic venting.
  • Inside, you can install racks for boxes of fruit, holders for tools or stands for barrels.
  • Secure the entrance doors against theft using a security lock or bar.
  • Lay wooden grates on the floor for easier maintenance and moisture drainage.
  • In winter, if necessary, add a simple portable heater to prevent stored materials from freezing.

Why build an orchard store specifically from a container

Decommissioned shipping containers represent a smart, economical and environmentally friendly way to quickly and efficiently create storage space exactly where it is needed. They allow reuse of old material that would otherwise remain unused. With minimal maintenance requirements and high durability, you get a practical store that will serve you for many years. If you are looking for quick, safe and universal storage for an orchard, a decommissioned shipping container is the ideal choice.
