A decommissioned 20-foot (approx. 6-metre) shipping container in AS IS 5 condition is a cost-effective solution for safe and practical storage on and off construction sites. These containers are no longer suitable for international transport or extensive structural modifications, but they retain a solid structure and resistance to weather conditions, making them ideal as storage space. Transport of the container to Příbor and elsewhere throughout the Czech Republic is free of charge when the conditions below are met!

Dimensions, payload and volume of a 20-foot container

A container 20 feet (6 m) long has standard dimensions:

  • external length: 6,058 mm
  • external width: 2,438 mm
  • external height: 2,591 mm
  • internal length: approx. 5,898 mm
  • internal width: approx. 2,352 mm
  • internal height: approx. 2,393 mm
  • volume: approx. 33 m³
  • payload: up to 28,000 kg (in practice it depends on the specific condition)

Thanks to these parameters, it offers sufficient space even for larger quantities of construction material and tools. Dimensions are indicative and may always vary slightly depending on the manufacturer.

Decommissioned shipping container as a storage unit for hand tools on a construction site

Planning a construction project and need a safe, practical and economical place to store hand tools?
A decommissioned shipping container is the ideal solution for you. Even though it is no longer suitable for further structural modifications or conversions, its robust steel construction and generous interior space make it a perfect store for construction tools, materials and equipment.

Possible uses and storage options

A decommissioned shipping container, also referred to as “AS IS”, is excellent for storing hand tools and construction equipment. Inside you can safely store everything from hammers, screwdrivers, saws, electric hand tools, drills, nails to smaller machines such as mixers or grinders. Thanks to standardized dimensions and a solid structure, the contents are protected against weather conditions, theft and dust.

Who the container store is suitable for

This type of storage will be appreciated especially by:

  • construction companies and tradespeople,
  • self-employed and small business owners in construction,
  • owners of family houses during renovations,
  • organisations managing multiple construction sites at once.

The container is ideal wherever tools need to be kept together, protected and easily accessible directly on the construction site.

Where a container store fits

A decommissioned container can be placed almost anywhere – on a construction site, in a company compound, in a family house yard, in a garden or on open space next to a hall. Thanks to its mobility, it can easily be moved to another location if necessary. It does not require permanent foundations or complex building permits, which speeds up and simplifies its use.

Advantages of using a decommissioned container

  • Immediate availability of storage space – no need to build a store from scratch.
  • Durability and security – strong walls and lockable doors protect the contents even in demanding conditions.
  • Mobility – can easily be moved as needed.
  • Low acquisition and operating costs – you save significantly compared to building a masonry store.
  • Environmentally friendly solution – extending the service life of the container saves the environment.
  • Variable interior layout – shelves, racks or hooks for hanging tools can be added.

Why build a hand tool store from a decommissioned container

A decommissioned container may no longer be in perfect condition, yet its basic function – protection and storage – remains fully preserved. For a hand tool store, perfect aesthetics or modernisation are not necessary. You save time and money, because the container is ready for immediate use and does not require complex modifications.

What can be stored and how much fits into a 20-foot container

A standard 20-foot container offers about 33 m³ of internal space (approx. 6 x 2.4 x 2.6 m). This means it can easily accommodate:

  • dozens of boxes with hand tools,
  • power tools and smaller machines,
  • racks with materials (screws, nails, anchors, etc.),
  • workwear and protective equipment,
  • small building materials (cement, paints, adhesives, etc.).

For better clarity, we recommend dividing the space into zones (e.g. racks along the sides, a workbench at the rear wall, hooks for hanging tools at the entrance).

Recommendations and ideas for storage

  • Use the container walls for hanging tools on hooks or perforated boards.
  • Install racks for smaller boxes and cartons.
  • You can add simple battery-powered or solar lighting to the container.
  • For better ventilation, ventilation grilles can be added (without interfering with the structure).
  • To increase security, use quality locks or a security bar on the doors.

A decommissioned shipping container represents a quick, inexpensive and reliable solution for storing hand tools on a construction site. Make use of its potential and be sure that your tools will always be at hand, safely stored and protected against loss or damage. Whether you are a company or a DIY enthusiast, a container store will bring you comfort, order and peace of mind on every construction site.
