Decommissioned shipping container as a warehouse in the garden: a smart solution for your needs
Decommissioned shipping containers are becoming an increasingly popular choice for gardeners and households looking for a safe, spacious and flexible storage space. Thanks to the robust steel construction, containers provide protection against the weather, humidity and unwanted visitors. Their versatility and easy adaptation to different needs makes them an ideal choice for any garden.
What can be stored in a container in the garden?
The possibilities of using a decommissioned container for storage in the garden are practically unlimited. The interior space can be adapted to specific needs with shelves, racks or hanging systems. Most often you will find here:
- Garden tools and equipment – lawnmowers, chainsaws, brush cutters, rakes, shovels, hoses, wheelbarrows and other common tools.
- Construction and maintenance materials – bags of fertilizers, substrates, sand, paving, tiles, paints, varnishes and chemicals safely separated from other items.
- Seasonal equipment – garden furniture, grills, parasols, pool accessories or decorations that you don’t want to leave outside during the winter.
- Sports equipment and toys – bicycles, scooters, children’s toys, balls, sledges or skis that would take up unnecessary space in the basement.
- Fuel storage – wood, coal or briquettes protected from moisture and rain.
Advantages of storage in a shipping container
- Safety – Steel construction and the possibility of locking ensure protection against theft and vandalism.
- Weather resistance – The container protects stored items from rain, snow, wind and UV radiation.
- Flexibility – The interior space can be modified as needed, with lights, ventilation or shelves.
- Immediate use – Once placed on the property, the container is immediately ready for use without any structural modifications.
- Mobility – If necessary, the container can be easily moved to another location in the garden or on the property.
How much fits into a 20-foot container?
A standard 20-foot (6-meter long) container offers a volume of around 33 cubic meters with internal dimensions of approximately 5.9 x 2.35 x 2.39 m. This means enough space for:
- Complete garden equipment and accessories (lawnmower, tractor, brush cutter)
- All common tools and hand tools
- Several sets of garden furniture
- Pallets with construction material
- Several bicycles, sports equipment and larger toys
- Firewood for the winter and summer pool accessories
Thanks to the high load capacity and solid floor, heavier items can also be stored in the container, which could not be stored in a regular garden shed.
Inspiration: How else can you use a decommissioned container in the garden?
- Garden workshop – equip the container with a workbench and storage systems for tools.
- Seasonal storage – store Christmas decorations, summer sports equipment or complete barbecue equipment here.
- Shelter for bicycles and motorcycles – a safe and dry place for two-wheeled vehicles.
- Small wood storage – separate part of the container for firewood so that it is always dry and ready for heating.
A decommissioned shipping container is an ideal solution for anyone who needs reliable, safe and spacious storage in the garden. With minimal modifications, you get a space that will grow with your needs and last for many years. Just place it in a suitable place and start using it – your garden will always be tidy, organized and you will have everything you need at hand.
