Use of a decommissioned container for undemanding storage in agriculture
Decommissioned shipping containers, often referred to as AS IS, are an ideal and affordable solution for undemanding storage, especially in agriculture. Despite minor wear and tear or cosmetic defects, they retain high utility value and offer farmers, growers and breeders a simple way to safely store equipment, tools or materials.
Advantages of container storage
The main advantages of using a decommissioned container include a robust steel construction that provides protection against the weather, pests and unauthorized entry. Containers are easily movable and immediately usable without the need for structural modifications. Thanks to locking systems, their security can be easily increased. Last but not least, their maintenance is minimal and lifespan is high.
What can be stored in the container
The possibilities of use are wide – the decommissioned container can be used to store:
- Agricultural implements and hand tools
Axes, rakes, shovels, hoes, sprayers and other common equipment. - Seasonal equipment
Small tractors, lawnmowers, chainsaws, pumps or generators. - Chemicals and fertilizers
Protectives, substrates, mineral fertilizers or seeds. - Packaging and packing materials
Bags, foils, boxes or pallets that need to be protected from moisture. - Growing materials
Pots, containers, nets, supports or netting. - Feed and bedding for animals
Bales of hay, bags of feed, straw or sawdust.
Storage for farmers – simplicity and efficiency
The container provides farmers and agricultural businesses with a quick and flexible way to expand storage space without building permits. It can be placed directly in the field, pasture or next to the farm building. Thanks to its mobility, the container can be easily moved to another location according to seasonal needs.
How much fits in a 20-foot container
A surprising amount of equipment fits into a standard 20-foot (approx. 6-meter) container. The volume is approximately 33 m³, which allows, for example, to store:
- several dozen bags of granules or fertilizers,
- small agricultural machinery and tools on one half,
- a supply of packaging materials, pallets and boxes on the other,
- or, for example, up to 250 bales of straw (depending on their size).
With the use of a shelving system, the storage capacity can be further multiplied and organized more clearly.
Inspiration and ideas for further use
A decommissioned container does not only have to serve as a warehouse. It is also often used as:
- Mobile workshop for minor repairs of machines directly in the field,
- Seed and seed storage in the spring,
- Safe shelter for more expensive equipment during the winter months,
- Space for sorting and packing the harvest outside the main farm operation,
- Seasonal storage for products before dispatch (apples, potatoes, vegetables).
The decommissioned container is thus a great helper for anyone who needs a quick, cheap and safe space for undemanding storage in agriculture. Take full advantage of its potential and enjoy the order and protection of your equipment even in demanding conditions.
