Decommissioned shipping container: An ideal solution for storing diving equipment
Shipping containers have recently become increasingly popular for various types of storage, mainly due to their durability, safety and flexibility. For divers and diving centers, a decommissioned shipping container is a great base where you can conveniently and safely store everything you need – from equipment, to maintenance tools, to goods intended for customers.
Advantages of storage in a shipping container
- Durability and safety: A shipping container is designed to withstand extreme conditions during transport across the ocean, which means that it perfectly protects your equipment from moisture, dust, UV radiation and thieves.
- Mobility and flexibility: The container can be easily placed directly by the water or in the diving center area where it is needed. If the location changes, it can be easily moved.
- Quick and simple solution: You do not need a building permit or complicated preparation – all you need is a flat surface and the container is immediately ready for use.
What can be stored in the container?
Storage of a decommissioned shipping container is very variable and adapts to both individual divers and the needs of larger diving clubs. The 20-foot (6m) container can comfortably accommodate:
- Complete diving equipment (suit, fins, masks, BCD, regulators, computers)
- Compressed air cylinders including stands
- Compressors and filling equipment
- Tools and service equipment for equipment maintenance
- Spare parts, seals, hoses, valves
- Cabinets and shelves for organized storage of small items
- Dryers for equipment, space for drying equipment in the shade and with ventilation
- Cleaning agents and disinfectants
- Equipment for instructors and rescue equipment
- Goods and products for customers (e.g. masks, snorkels, wetsuits, equipment for sale)
- Protective covers, suitcases and transport boxes
Equipment storage: Protection that your equipment deserves
Diving equipment requires proper storage to remain reliable and safe. A shipping container allows you to keep equipment dry, shaded and out of direct sunlight, which extends the life of all materials. Thanks to the possibility of creating a well-ventilated and organized space inside the container, it can be easily ensured that the equipment dries properly after each dive and is not exposed to moisture or mold.
Storage of tools and equipment for area maintenance
In addition to the diving equipment itself, it is also necessary to have tools and materials for maintaining the equipment and the surrounding area. The shipping container provides enough space for safe storage:
- Electric and hand tools
- Service suitcases and boxes
- Cleaning machines and agents
- Ladders, hoses, canisters and other technical equipment
Storage of items for customers and sales
If you run a diving center, you can also use the container as a warehouse for goods, a rental shop or even a small shop. Separate zones will allow you to effectively divide the space for your own equipment and supplies intended for customers.
How much fits in a 20-foot container?
A standard 20-foot container (internal dimensions approx. 5.9 × 2.35 × 2.39 m) can hold a lot. For example, it allows:
- Storage of equipment for the entire diving club (10–15 complete sets including cylinders)
- Fully equipped service workshop
- Separate space for goods for sale
- Equipment drying zone
- Clear shelves, cabinets and hanging systems
