Container shipping rates from Asia to the East Coast of the USA have experienced a dramatic drop due to the anticipated strike and the threat of tariff reinstatement. Spot rates from Shanghai to New York plunged by 21% to $6,661 per 40-foot equivalent unit (FEU) during the week ending September 12, 2024. This drop was caused by carriers attempting to preempt the expected strike and potential duties.
Continuing Decline in Global Container Index
Drewry’s global container index continues to decline sharply, falling by 13% to $4,168 per 40-foot container. This index is now 60% lower than during the pandemic peak in September 2021, when it reached $10,377. Despite this, it is still 193% higher than the pre-pandemic average rate in 2019, which was $1,420.
Carrier Shifts Between U.S. Coasts
Due to the planned strike by the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) in October, carriers are moving their cargo from the U.S. East Coast to the West Coast, which has led to a decrease in demand and a subsequent drop in rates on the East Coast. This situation has resulted in a massive 21% drop in rates on the East Coast.
