Crisis and Shipping Containers

14. 11. 2025

Shipping container is a standardized, reusable transport unit designed for efficient and secure transportation of goods between continents. Its main advantage is universal use across all types of transport (maritime, rail, road) without the need to handle the contents. Containerization – a transport system based on standard containers – brought a revolution in logistics in the mid-20th century, enabled massive development of international trade, and significantly reduced transportation costs.

Technical Standards and Norms

Norm/StandardDescriptionReference
ISO 668:2020Classification, dimensions and carrying capacity of containersISO 668:2020
ISO 1496-1:2013Specification and testing (containers for general use)ISO 1496-1:2013
CSC (Container Safety Convention)Safety label, mandatory for transport
  • Material: High-quality Corten steel with high resistance to corrosion and weather effects.
  • Identification: Each container has a unique BIC code (four letters and seven digits), identification ISO code and CSC safety label.
  • Stackability: The design allows stacking up to 9 layers (depending on type), with maximum carrying capacity at corner posts up to 86 tons.

Types and Sizes of Shipping Containers

The diversity of cargo led to the creation of a whole range of container types. According to ISO/DCSA, containers are distinguished primarily by dimensions, construction and specialization:

Container TypeISO CodeBasic Dimensions (length × width × height)Use
Standard (Dry Van)XXGX20′ (6.06m), 40′ (12.19m), 40’HC (height 2.90m)Dry goods, palletized cargo, general use
Refrigerated (Reefer)XXRX20′, 40′, 40’HC, 45’HCFood, medicine, temperature-controlled goods (-65°C to +40°C)
TankXXTX20′, 40′Liquids, gases, chemicals
Flat RackXXPX20′, 40′Machinery, vehicles, oversized cargo
Open TopXXUX20′, 40′, 40’HCCargo loaded from above (wood, equipment, bulk material)
Open SideXXUX20′, 40′, 40’HCCargo handling through side doors

Capacity Units

Construction and Safety

Key Structural Elements

  • Frame: Welded construction from high-strength profiles.
  • Walls: Corrugated sheet for increased rigidity, sandwich panels with insulation for refrigerated units.
  • Doors: Double, sealed, with four locks and possibility of sealing.
  • Floor: Most commonly plywood with anti-slip treatment, steel pan for tank variants.

Safety Measures

  • Locks (Locking gear): Robust mechanism protecting against unauthorized access.
  • Seals: Numbered, single-use, for ensuring cargo integrity.
  • CSC label: Mandatory for international transport, contains data on carrying capacity, date of last inspection, etc.

Logistics and Intermodal Transport

Principle of Intermodality

  • Intermodal transport allows moving the entire container between ship, train and truck without unloading the contents.
  • Advantage: Minimal handling, lower risk of damage, higher efficiency.

Automation and Digitalization

  • Modern container terminals use semi-automated/automated cranes, AGV (automated guided vehicles), and advanced software systems.
  • Digitalization (DCSA standards, track&trace, IoT sensors) enables real-time monitoring of location, condition and safety.

Shipping Container Crisis (2020–2023): Causes, Course, Consequences

Main Causes of Global Crisis

  • COVID-19 Pandemic: Massive fluctuations in demand, factory/port closures, labor shortages, breakdown of established goods flows.
  • Imbalance in Container Distribution: Empty containers remained in Europe/USA, were lacking in Asia.
  • Suez Canal Blockade (March 2021): Delays of hundreds of ships, disruption of schedules for months.
  • Port Congestion: For example, in western USA, waiting times for unloading reached record values.

Statistical Facts and Development

  • Shipping Prices: The price for transporting a container from China to the USA nearly tripled in 2021, to Europe it increased by hundreds of percent (EasyCargo, CNB).
  • Share of Containers Stuck in Operation: In November 2022, 8.5% of total global capacity was delayed (before the pandemic commonly 5.8–7.3%). Since summer 2022, this indicator decreased by 1.5 p.p. monthly (JARO Sea & Air, IfW).
  • Market Consolidation: The 10 largest carriers controlled 85% of the market in 2021 (in 2000 it was only 51%; CNB).
  • Global GDP Growth: Recovery after the 2020 shock, in 2021 world economic growth of 6.0% was expected, China even 8%.

Consequences for Companies and Consumers

  • Companies: Lack of components, delayed deliveries, need to reconsider supply strategies, higher input prices.
  • Consumers: Higher prices for goods, unavailability of some products (electronics, sports equipment, furniture).
  • Economy: Global inflation, delays in public procurement, new risk management strategies.

Alternative Uses of Shipping Containers

Overview of Options

UseDescription and Examples
StorageStorage boxes, mobile warehouses on construction sites
ArchitectureResidential homes, offices, schools, hospitals

  • Advantages: Speed of installation, modularity, low price of decommissioned containers, ecological recycling of building material.

Future of Container Shipping and Logistics Innovations

Key Trends and Innovations

  • Terminal Automation: Increases throughput, reduces human errors and speeds up handling.
  • Smart Containers: Equipped with IoT sensors for monitoring location, temperature, humidity, vibrations and opening.
  • Process Digitalization: DCSA standards, API communication, track&trace across carriers, real-time reports.
  • Sustainability: LNG ships, methanol, development of hydrogen propulsion, route optimization, container recycling.
  • Supply Chain Diversification: Near-shoring, friend-shoring, decentralization of production and storage.

Challenges and Opportunities

  • Resilience to Shocks: More flexible inventory management, greater transparency, more effective crisis scenarios.
  • Environmental Legislation: Reducing CO₂ emissions, stricter IMO standards.
  • Technology and Data: Greater use of AI, blockchain and predictive analytics in logistics planning.
