Algeciras Spain – container port and depot
Algeciras is the largest container port in the Mediterranean and one of the ten busiest ports in Europe. Nearly 5 million TEUs pass through it annually, making it a natural hub for trade in used shipping containers. HZ-Containers has the opportunity to sell used shipping containers of all common sizes and quality grades in this strategic port. On this page you will find everything essential about the port, the depot and the containers themselves – and most importantly, how to choose the right unit for your needs.
Port of Algeciras – Gateway to World Trade
The Port of Algeciras is located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, right next to the Strait of Gibraltar – the point where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea. Hundreds of ships pass through here daily on routes between Europe, Asia, Africa and America. This location makes Algeciras one of the best-connected ports in the world – in terms of maritime connectivity, it ranks 5th in Europe and 2nd in Spain.
Strategic Location on the Strait of Gibraltar
The Strait of Gibraltar is one of the narrowest and busiest maritime corridors on the planet. The width of the strait at its narrowest point is just 14 kilometers. All ships heading from Northern Europe to Asia via the Suez Canal, as well as routes between Africa and Europe, pass right through here. From this position, Algeciras benefits as a key transshipment hub – goods are transferred here from large ocean-going vessels onto smaller ships for regional distribution, and vice versa.
Key Port Figures and Statistics

The port operates two main container terminals. APM Terminals Algeciras at the Juan Carlos I quay is a world-class terminal that handles even the largest container ships exceeding 20,000 TEU. TTI Algeciras at Isla Verde Exterior is the first semi-automated terminal in Southern Europe – it operates with 8 STS cranes and 32 automated stacking cranes (ASC). Together, both terminals have a capacity of 14 million TEU per year.
It is precisely this massive volume of transshipped containers that creates a strong market for used shipping containers in Algeciras. Containers that have completed their shipping career end up in depots here – and HZ-Containers offers them to you for sale.
Why Buy a Used Shipping Container Right in Algeciras
Buying a container directly at the port depot brings several concrete advantages over buying from inland warehouses. The container does not need to be transported hundreds of kilometers from the coast – it is available practically immediately after unloading from the ship.
Advantage of Buying Directly at the Port Depot
Containers in the Algeciras port depot undergo regular inspection and grading by quality. The depot is equipped with its own cranes, ensuring safe and fast loading onto your transport vehicle. You don’t need to worry about transshipments or intermediate storage – you arrive, load and drive away.
Lower Logistics Costs for Customers from Southern Europe and North Africa
Algeciras is logistically advantageous for buyers from the entire Iberian Peninsula – Spain, Portugal and Gibraltar. It is also easily accessible for customers from Southern France, Italy and especially North Africa. Morocco is just 14 kilometers from Algeciras across the Strait of Gibraltar, and regular ferries connect the two continents. If you are purchasing a container for use in these regions, you will save on transport compared to buying from depots in Central or Northern Europe.
What Used Containers We Offer at the Algeciras Depot
At the Algeciras depot you will find used shipping containers in several sizes and quality grades. Each type has its specific use and is suited to a different application.
Container Dimensions and Types
| Container type | Length | Width | Height | Internal volume |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20′ standard (6 m) | 6.06 m | 2.44 m | 2.59 m | ~33 m³ |
| 40′ standard (12 m) | 12.19 m | 2.44 m | 2.59 m | ~67 m³ |
| 40′ High Cube | 12.19 m | 2.44 m | 2.89 m | ~76 m³ |
The most sought-after is the 20-foot container – it is compact, easy to transport and affordable. The forty-foot container offers double the space and is ideal for larger projects. The High Cube version adds an extra 30 cm in height, which you will appreciate especially when storing bulkier items or when converting the container into residential or office spaces.
Quality Grades – From Cargo Worthy to As-Is
| Quality grade | Condition | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Cargo Worthy (CW) | Fully functional, watertight, with valid CSC certification | Sea and land transport, storage of valuable goods |
| Wind and Water Tight (WWT) | Watertight, without CSC certification | Storage, construction cabins, workshops, garages |
| As-Is | Sold “as is, where is” | Light storage, reconstruction projects, garden sheds |
Cargo Worthy (CW) is the highest quality grade of used containers. The container has passed a certified inspection under the CSC agreement, is watertight, the doors operate smoothly, and the floor is firm with no signs of rot. Only cosmetic defects are permitted – minor scratches and light surface rust. You can use this container without concern for additional sea transport.
Wind and Water Tight (WWT) is the middle grade, which guarantees watertightness and solid construction, but does not have a valid CSC certification. It is suitable for storing tools, building materials, seasonal equipment, or as a basis for a construction cabin or workshop.
As-Is is the economical option – the container is sold in its current condition without warranty. It may have dents, more advanced corrosion, and non-functioning seals. It is suitable for DIY enthusiasts who plan to carry out their own repairs, or for uses where watertightness does not matter (e.g. open storage, garden shed after reconstruction).
How to Choose the Right Used Container – What to Look For
Choosing a used shipping container is not complicated if you know what to look at. The following checklist points will help you make the right decision.
Inspecting the Container Condition Before Purchase
Before purchasing, focus on five key areas:
- Doors and seals – open and close both door leaves. They must move smoothly, without sticking. Check the rubber seals around the entire perimeter – they must not be swollen, torn or missing. The seals are the main barrier against water.
- Floor – the floor of a shipping container is made of marine plywood 28 mm thick. Check that it is not soft, that there are no stains from leaking cargo or signs of rot. Pay special attention to the corners and edges at the walls.
- Walls and corrosion – light surface rust is normal and not damaging. Deep corrosion, particularly in the corners, on the bottom frame and around the doors, signals a more serious problem. Check whether there are any holes in the walls.
- CSC plate – if you are buying a Cargo Worthy grade container, it must have a valid CSC plate with the date of the last inspection. The plate is valid for 30 months from the date of inspection.
