Without certified corner castings, the entire container shipping system would be dangerous and inefficient.

  • Impact toughness: Verified by Charpy test at -20 °C to -40 °C.
  • Weldability: Steel must have low carbon equivalent (Ceq/CEN) to minimize cracking risk.

Why not aluminum?

Aluminum is lightweight and corrosion-resistant, but its load capacity is insufficient for the extreme pressures in container stacks and is more expensive than cast steel.

ISO 1161 Standard: Foundation of standardization

ISO 1161:2016 is the key international standard that defines all aspects of corner casting:

  • Precise dimensions and tolerances (to tenths of a millimeter).
  • Geometry, shape, and size of openings.
  • Requirements for strength, functionality, and mutual compatibility.

Certification process

  1. Manufacturer approval:
    • The manufacturer must have an established quality management system (QMS).
    • Audits of manufacturing processes, material controls, welder qualifications, and calibration of fixtures are conducted.
  2. Design and prototype approval:
    • Each new type undergoes approval procedures according to drawings, material data sheets, and test plans.
    • The prototype is subjected to tests for strength, toughness, and dimensional accuracy.
  3. Testing and inspection:
    • Chemical analysis: Each heat is analyzed for composition.
    • Mechanical tests: Tensile test, Charpy impact test (toughness).
    • Visual and dimensional inspection: 100% visual inspections, measurements per ISO 1161.
    • Non-destructive testing (NDT): Ultrasound, radiography – inspection for internal defects.
    • Load tests: A statistical sample (1.5%) is subjected to test forces higher than operational load (e.g., stacking test ~848 kN, lifting test ~150 kN). Only after successful completion of all inspections is a quality certificate issued.

Each certified corner casting bears specific markings:

Repairs and maintenance of certified corner castings

  • Inspection: Regularly (especially during CSC inspections) check for corrosion, cracks, deformations.
  • Minor defects: Can be removed by grinding, but thickness must not be reduced below the permitted limit.
  • Welding: Repairs of deeper defects only by qualified welder according to approved procedure, often with preheating and subsequent heat treatment, mandatory NDT inspection of the weld.
  • Replacement: In case of serious damage, professional replacement of the entire component is necessary.

Improper repair can result in loss of certification and endangerment of transport safety.
