Decommissioned shipping containers as backdrops in the film industry
Decommissioned shipping containers, that is, those that no longer serve their original purpose of transporting goods, are finding an increasingly wide range of uses in various industries. One of them is the film industry, where containers are gaining popularity as practical and creative backdrops. Thanks to their unique properties and customization options, they become an ideal choice for various types of filming.
What advantages does a shipping container bring as a film backdrop?
Using a decommissioned shipping container as a film backdrop offers several advantages. One of the greatest advantages is their durability. Steel construction allows the use of containers even in demanding conditions, such as outdoor filming or environments with extreme weather conditions. Containers are also easily movable, which greatly facilitates the logistics of filming at various locations.
Another advantage is design flexibility. Shipping containers can be easily adapted to the specific needs of a film project. They can be modified to look like industrial halls, warehouses, military bases, futuristic architecture or any other space that the script requires. This can save filmmakers significant costs on building sets from scratch.
Who is this solution suitable for?
The use of shipping containers as backdrops is ideal for film productions that are looking for a cost-effective, quick and at the same time authentic solution. Containers will be appreciated by both large production companies filming blockbusters and smaller independent crews with limited budgets. They are also suitable for filming commercials, music videos or television programs.
Where to use shipping containers for filming?
Shipping containers are suitable for filming both indoors and outdoors. They can be used at abandoned industrial sites, in natural locations or directly in film studios. Thanks to their compact size and portability, they can be easily placed even in confined spaces where it would be difficult to build traditional sets.
Practical use: not just a backdrop, but also storage on the filming site
Another added value of shipping containers is their practical use as storage space directly at the filming site. Production teams can use containers to safely store equipment, props, costumes or other equipment. Thanks to the robust construction, containers are resistant to adverse weather conditions, which guarantees the safety of stored items. Moreover, their lockability provides protection against theft.
Creative ideas for use
Shipping containers can be used very creatively in the film industry. Here are some ideas:
- Industrial environment: Container as part of an abandoned factory or warehouse.
- Military bases: Containers can be easily converted into military bunkers, command posts or weapons storage.
- Futuristic backdrops: With some modifications, they can look like part of a sci-fi world, such as a space station or laboratory.
- Urban jungle: Containers can be used as part of an urban environment, for example as improvised housing.
- Natural scenery: In nature, they can serve as bases for expeditions or as shelters for characters in the story.
If you plan to use decommissioned shipping containers for your film project, start by clarifying your needs. Do you need a container as a backdrop, storage or both? Then you can think about its modifications – from basic painting and minor modifications to major renovations that give it a completely new look.
Shipping containers offer filmmakers a unique combination of practicality and creative freedom. Whether you are looking for a backdrop that impresses or safe storage for equipment and props, containers are a solution worth considering.
