Use of a decommissioned shipping container for traveling theaters

A decommissioned shipping container, which is no longer suitable for transport or extensive structural modifications, finds surprisingly practical application in storage. Especially traveling theaters, which often change their locations, will appreciate its versatility and robustness. Thanks to its construction, it provides a safe, lockable, and mobile base for all equipment necessary for operating a theater on the road.

Advantages of container storage

The container offers several key advantages. First and foremost, it is resistant to weather conditions – protecting stored items from rain, snow, and wind. Furthermore, it is secure, as the solid steel construction prevents unauthorized entry and ensures protection against theft. Containers are easily relocatable and allow for quick and efficient transfer of supplies and facilities to a new location. The interior space can be further modified by adding shelves, racks, or hanging systems, without the need to interfere with the container’s structure itself.

What can be stored in a container

Traveling theaters need to have various types of equipment at hand. A decommissioned container provides ample space for:

  • Scenery and props
  • Costumes and clothing
  • Lighting and sound equipment
  • Musical instruments
  • Tools and maintenance materials
  • Performers’ personal belongings
  • Goods and souvenirs for sale during performances

Storage of equipment for performances

The main part of the container’s interior space can be used for storing scenery, stage elements, and props, which are often bulky and sensitive to damage. The container protects them from moisture and dust and ensures they are not damaged during transport. The strength of the structure allows for safe stacking of even heavier items.

Storage of tools and maintenance materials

To ensure the smooth running of every performance, it is essential to have the necessary tools available – from hammers and screwdrivers to paints and fasteners. A decommissioned container offers an ideal space for separate storage of these items, contributing to greater clarity and tidiness. Thanks to the option of adding shelves or boxes, tools can be easily organized and quickly found.

Storage of performers’ belongings

Costumes, props, personal belongings of ensemble members – all of this needs its place. The container allows a portion of the space to be dedicated solely to the needs of performers, where more valuable items or weather-sensitive belongings can be safely stored. Separate sections or lockable cabinets can be placed inside without interfering with the structure.

Storage of goods for sale

The sale of souvenirs, programs, and other small items is often part of traveling theaters. A decommissioned container will provide the necessary space for their safe storage, and thanks to easy handling, goods can be quickly prepared for on-site sale. The steel construction ensures that everything remains safe even when unattended.

Options for organizing and modifying the interior space

Although it is not recommended to structurally modify a decommissioned container, the interior can be adapted according to specific needs. By installing mobile shelves, racks, hooks, or boxes, the clarity and efficiency of storage can be significantly increased. Depending on preferences, the space can be divided into smaller sections for different types of equipment or a separate area can be created for technical equipment or personal belongings.

Capacity of a 20-foot container

A standard 20-foot container (6.06 m length, 2.44 m width, 2.59 m height) has an internal volume of approximately 33 m³ and a load capacity of up to 28 tons. To illustrate – such a space can comfortably store the complete facilities of a medium-sized traveling theater, including several large-scale sceneries, dozens of costumes, lighting and sound equipment, tools, maintenance supplies, and goods for sale. For smaller ensembles, the capacity is often more than sufficient; larger collectives can use multiple containers and divide the contents according to their needs.

A decommissioned shipping container is an excellent solution for traveling theaters looking for a reliable, secure, and flexible way to store their equipment. It provides protection from weather and thieves, and thanks to its mobility, it supports the free movement of the theater ensemble. Its versatility and capacity make it an ideal choice for any traveling theater that wants to ensure all necessary items are always at hand and in order.
