Dimensions, load capacity and volume of a 20-foot container
20’ (6 m) is one of the most common types. Its standard dimensions are:
- External length: 6.06 m
- External width: 2.44 m
- External height: 2.59 m
- Internal length: approx. 5.90 m
- Internal width: approx. 2.35 m
- Internal height: approx. 2.39 m
- Volume: approximately 33 m³
- Load capacity: standard up to 28,000 kg (however, it is recommended to use decommissioned containers mainly for lighter materials)
This size allows you to conveniently store even larger volumes of material, tools or other equipment. The dimensions are indicative and may always vary slightly depending on the manufacturer.
Decommissioned container as an ideal workshop or storage for small repairmen in the garden
A decommissioned shipping container, which is no longer suitable for conversions and structural interventions, finds its new and practical use as a workshop or storage in the garden. For small repairmen, DIY enthusiasts and home craftsmen, such a solution is becoming increasingly popular. What is its main benefit and for whom is it really suitable?
Possibilities of using a decommissioned container
A decommissioned container on the property provides a quick, safe and cheap way to get a separate workshop or storage space directly in the garden. You do not have to build expensive brick or wooden structures. Just place the container in a suitable place and you can immediately start using its interior spaces according to your needs – as:
- Workshop for repairing garden equipment, bicycles, tools and other equipment
- Storage for garden tools, material, spare parts, seasonal machines
- Space for storing firewood, building material, paints and chemicals
- Temporary shelter for unfinished projects, protected from rain and wind
For whom is a garden workshop made of a container suitable
Such a solution will be especially appreciated by small repairmen, gardeners, hobby craftsmen or owners of family houses and cottages. It is suitable for anyone who needs their own work space outside, but does not want to invest in complex buildings. Thanks to its mobility, the container can be moved as needed, and it is not necessary to apply for a building permit (always check local regulations).
Where to place a container workshop or storage
The container can be placed almost anywhere in the garden or on the property – most often in the back of the plot, on a solid foundation (concrete pads, paving), where it will not interfere with normal operation. The advantage is that the container can also be built where a classic building would not be possible, for example on a slope or in less accessible places.
Advantages of using a decommissioned container
- Durability and safety: The steel structure protects the contents from weather, thieves and fire.
- Immediate use: Just place it on the property and you can use it immediately.
- Flexibility: If necessary, the container can be moved to another location.
- Low purchase price: Decommissioned containers are more affordable than new ones.
- Maintenance-free: Minimal need for repairs, simple cleaning.
- Ecological solution: You give a new life to an already unnecessary container.
What can be stored in a 20-foot container
A standard 20-foot container offers approximately 33 m³ of space and a usable area of approximately 13 m². You can easily store in it:
- All common garden tools, lawnmowers, chainsaws, rakes, wheelbarrows
- Work tables, shelves, racks for tools and material
- Bicycles, scooters, smaller motorcycles
- Firewood, bags with substrate, fertilizers, building material
- Seasonal furniture, grills, pool accessories
Everything can be effectively divided using shelves, hooks on the walls or mounted shelves.
Recommendations for setup and organization
- Floor: Check that it is dry and solid, or lay rubber mats.
- Shelves and racks: Use the height of the container to install shelves, hooks and stands.
- Lighting: For comfortable work, we recommend installing an LED light (e.g. on a battery).
- Ventilation: Simple ventilation grilles can be used for better air circulation.
- Security: Invest in a quality lock.
Ideas and tips for use
- Divide the space into a working (workshop) and storage area
- Create a mobile workbench on wheels
- Wall shelves for smaller tools and material
- Suspension systems for bicycles, hoses, extension cords
