Dimensions, load capacity and volume of a 20-foot container

Standard 20-foot (6m) shipping container offers the following parameters:

  • External dimensions: length 6.06 m, width 2.44 m, height 2.59 m
  • Internal dimensions: length approx. 5.90 m, width 2.35 m, height 2.39 m
  • Volume: approximately 33.2 m³
  • Load capacity: up to 25,000 kg (more than sufficient for storing ordinary material)

These dimensions allow you to store a really large amount of equipment, goods, tools and material. Dimensions are approximate and may always vary slightly depending on the manufacturer.

Decommissioned shipping container as storage for yachtsmen

A decommissioned shipping container of length 20 feet (approx. 6 meters) is increasingly proving to be an ideal storage space for yachting areas and clubs. Its robust construction, lockability and mobility make it a versatile and safe base directly at the pier or near yachting bases. For yachtsmen, the container is an invaluable aid – providing a dry, protected and well-organized place to store all the necessary equipment.

What can be stored in the container?

A decommissioned 20-foot container offers enough space for a wide range of yachting equipment and accessories. The most common items that can be conveniently and safely stored include:

  • Sails and ropes – protected from moisture, UV radiation and mechanical damage.
  • Life jackets, buoys, anchors, fenders – neatly stored, always ready for use.
  • Boat maintenance tools – from hand tools to larger equipment (vacuum cleaners, pumps, grinders).
  • Area accessories – mowers, garden tools, cleaning supplies, work clothes.
  • Spare parts and consumables – screws, seals, paints, lubricants, filters, etc.
  • Trolleys, transport boxes, storage racks – for better organization of space.

Advantages of using a decommissioned container

A used shipping container offers several key benefits over conventional warehouses or tin sheds:

  • Durability and safety – solid steel construction protects against burglary, wind and rain.
  • Mobility – the container can be easily moved to another part of the area or to a new site if needed.
  • Flexibility – it can be equipped with shelves, racks or suspended systems tailored to the needs of yachtsmen.
  • Quick installation – no foundations are needed, just a paved surface.
  • Cost savings – using a decommissioned container is more cost-effective than building a new warehouse.

How much fits in a 20-foot container?

A standard 20-foot container has internal dimensions of approximately 5.9 x 2.35 x 2.39 m (length x width x height) and a volume of around 33 m³. This allows it to hold:

  • Dozens of sails, ropes, vests and other small equipment,
  • Larger items such as boat trolleys, barrels, ladders,
  • Rack systems along the entire length for clear arrangement of parts and tools,
  • Seasonal equipment (e.g. high-pressure cleaners, mowers),
  • Larger stocks of small material and spare parts.

With a little planning, you can divide the entire interior into sections for individual types of equipment or club members. If necessary, the container can be supplemented with ventilation, lighting or minor modifications for easier handling inside.

A decommissioned shipping container of 20 feet is a proven choice for yachtsmen looking for a safe and efficient storage solution. It allows you to store everything you need from equipment, tools to maintenance material, right by the water. Thanks to its variability, strength and easy modification, it represents an investment that pays off in the long term for every yacht club or private boat owner.
