A 20-foot (approx. 6-meter) shipping container that has been retired from transport is an affordable and robust storage solution. This is so-called “AS IS” quality, which means that the container is no longer suitable for further transport or major structural modifications, but still offers sufficient strength and protection for stored items. Transport of the container to Rokycany and elsewhere in the Czech Republic is free of charge if the conditions below are met.

Dimensions of a 20-foot container

  • internal length: 5.9 m
  • internal width: 2.35 m
  • internal height: 2.39 m
  • volume: 33.2 m³
  • maximum load capacity: up to 25,000 kg

This size is sufficient for storing a large amount of material, tools and goods. Dimensions are approximate and may always vary slightly depending on the manufacturer.

Use of a decommissioned shipping container for storage at a winery

A decommissioned shipping container is an ideal solution for all winemakers looking for a safe, spacious and practical storage space. Decommissioned containers are no longer used for maritime transport and are therefore not suitable for major structural modifications or conversions. However, their robust construction still offers excellent protection against the weather, humidity and thieves – which is essential for storage in the winery.

What can be stored in a decommissioned container

Shipping containers provide winemakers with a versatile space to store everything they need in their operations. In the container, you can easily and clearly store:

  • Finished products – bottles of wine ready for sale, barrels of wine, labels, packaging.
  • Raw materials – harvested grapes, fermentation vessels, ingredients and other materials needed for wine production.
  • Equipment and tools – pumps, presses, hoses, gardening tools, sprayers, filters, etc.
  • Maintenance supplies – cleaning agents, brushes, buckets, work clothes.
  • Sales materials – stands, marketing materials, gift packaging, glasses and other accessories for tastings.

Thanks to its spaciousness, the container is also suitable for seasonal storage of items that are not needed all year round, such as stalls, tents or event equipment.

Advantages of storage in a decommissioned container

A decommissioned shipping container has a number of advantages over conventional warehouses or shelters:

  • Durability and security – the solid steel construction protects against theft and vandalism.
  • Protection against moisture – a properly placed container with functional doors and seals protects the contents from rain and snow.
  • Mobility – the container can be moved to another location within the winery at any time, or sold or offered for further use in the future.
  • Easy maintenance – no complicated care is needed, the steel walls can be easily cleaned.
  • Quick solution – you can start storing immediately after delivery, no building permits are required.
  • Favorable price – compared to building a new building, the purchase price of the container is significantly lower.

How much fits in a 20-foot container

A standard decommissioned shipping container with a length of 20 feet (approximately 6 meters) offers an
internal volume of around 33 m³ and a load capacity of up to several tons. This means that you can comfortably store, for example:

  • Over 10 pallets of wine or raw materials.
  • Hundreds of pieces of tools and small equipment.
  • Several barrels or tanks of wine, including additional materials.
  • Seasonal stalls, wine racks, presentation materials or garden equipment.

Thanks to the large double doors, handling pallet trucks and larger pieces of equipment is very easy.

Uses and recommendations

If you are looking for a quick and secure storage solution without the need for structural modifications, a decommissioned shipping container is the obvious choice. It is ideal as an additional warehouse for winery needs, but it can also be used as a base for seasonal tools, a space for storing wine before shipment or as a clear warehouse for sales materials.

Given that the decommissioned container is no longer suitable for major structural interventions (such as cutting out windows, doors or insulation), we recommend using it primarily as a closed and secure storage space.

A decommissioned shipping container is an ideal choice for winemakers to effectively expand storage
capacities without having to invest in a new building. Its versatility, safety and durability will be appreciated by anyone who needs to protect their products, raw materials, tools and sales equipment in any season. Storage in a decommissioned container is a practical, economical and reliable solution for every modern winery.
