Dimensions and technical parameters of a 20-foot container

The 20-foot shipping container is one of the most used storage spaces. Its dimensions are approximately:

  • External length: 6.06 m
  • External width: 2.44 m
  • External height: 2.59 m
  • Internal length: 5.90 m
  • Internal width: 2.35 m
  • Internal height: 2.39 m
  • Usable volume: approx. 33.2 m³
  • Load capacity: up to 25,000 kg

Thanks to these parameters, the container can hold a really large amount of material and spare parts. The dimensions are indicative and may always vary slightly depending on the manufacturer.

Decommissioned container as a spare parts warehouse or undemanding workshop

A decommissioned shipping container, often referred to as “AS IS”, is an ideal solution for anyone looking for an affordable and quick way to gain space for storing spare parts or building a simple workshop for handling them. Even if such a container is not suitable for major structural modifications, its robust construction and versatility make it a very practical choice for many users.

Possibilities of using a decommissioned container for storing parts

The most common use of decommissioned containers is precisely in the area of storage – and not only for
spare parts for cars, machines or agricultural equipment. A decommissioned container is also suitable for storing tools, materials, small machinery or seasonal needs. Thanks to its solid steel construction, it provides a safe and dry environment, protecting the contents from the weather and theft.

If you need a place for an undemanding workshop, for example for sorting, repairing or preparing spare parts, a decommissioned container will serve you perfectly. Just equip it with a basic workbench, shelves and electrical wiring – and you have a functional work area in a matter of days.

Who is this solution suitable for?

A decommissioned container will be especially appreciated by:

  • Smaller companies and car repair shops – for safe storage of spare parts, tires, oils or tools.
  • Farmers and gardeners – for storing spare parts for equipment, seasonal equipment or fertilizers.
  • Home DIYers – for setting up a DIY workshop on their own land, where the industrial design of the container will not be a problem.
  • Construction companies – as a temporary storage of materials and parts on construction sites.

Where is a decommissioned container suitable for

Thanks to its mobility and easy handling, a decommissioned container can be placed practically anywhere – in the garden, yard, parking lot, in the company premises or directly on the construction site. It is an ideal choice wherever it is not possible or appropriate to build a classic warehouse or workshop and you need to quickly obtain a lockable space.

Advantages of using a container as a warehouse or workshop

  • Speed and simplicity – the container is immediately ready for use, without complicated construction modifications and permits.
  • Durability – the steel construction lasts for years, resists moisture, wind and unauthorized entry.
  • Variability of internal layout – shelves, racks, boxes, tables can be freely added according to current needs.
  • Ecological solution – extending the life of a decommissioned container is environmentally friendly.
  • Mobility – the possibility to move the container to another location at any time as needed.

What can be stored in a decommissioned container

A wide range of items can be stored in the container: from small screws, to entire pallets with spare parts, to large machine parts, tools, tires, barrels with liquids or seasonal equipment. When storing, it is important to ensure the correct placement of things and use the space to the last centimeter.

How much fits into a 20-foot container?

A standard 20-foot container offers a volume of approximately 33 m³, which corresponds to, for example, storing several dozen pallets with parts, complete equipment of a smaller car repair shop or several hundred pieces of smaller spare parts neatly in shelves. For example: several larger machine parts, spare tires, dozens of plastic boxes with small material can be easily placed in this space, and there will still be room for a workbench.

Recommendations and ideas for practical use

  • Divide the interior space into a storage and work area – for example, using shelves or a hanging tool wall.
  • For better clarity, use a labeling system (labels, QR codes).
  • Consider installing basic lighting and security (locks, or a simple alarm).
  • For seasonal needs, the space can be easily adapted – shelves for winter/shutdown parts, summer equipment, etc.
  • If you work with liquids, a floor with a tub or grate is recommended to catch any leaks.

Why choose a decommissioned container for a warehouse or workshop with spare parts?

The “AS IS” container is a fast, durable and economical solution for anyone who needs affordable space without complicated construction. Despite minor wear and tear or cosmetic defects, it reliably provides a safe background for your spare parts and work equipment – whether in the garden, at the company, on the construction site or in the agricultural area.

You will extend the life of used containers and get a practical warehouse or workshop that will last for years. Just choose the right size, think about the interior layout and start using all the advantages that decommissioned containers offer.
