Use of decommissioned container for storage on bridge construction sites
Decommissioned sea containers find wide application even after they are no longer used for international transport. One of the most common and practical ways to use them is for storage on bridge construction sites. A bridge construction site needs a safe, flexible and spacious base for storing everything necessary for the project. The decommissioned container reliably meets these requirements.
Advantages of storage in a decommissioned container
The main advantage of decommissioned containers is their robust steel construction, which protects stored material from weather, dust and unwanted visitors. Thanks to standardized dimensions (most often 20 feet, i.e. approx. 6 × 2.4 m) they are easily handled by crane or forklift and can be moved according to the current needs of the site. Doors on one end of the container allow convenient access and quick loading and unloading of items.
Another benefit is a high level of security – metal walls and the possibility of locking with a padlock protect the equipment not only from theft but also from damage. The container can also be placed directly on the construction site, keeping all equipment constantly at hand.
What can be stored in a decommissioned container
A decommissioned container offers a universal storage space that can be used for:
- Construction materials: cement, lime, bagged sand, reinforcement, wood, steel profiles, scaffolding and other small or bulky materials.
- Machinery and equipment: mixers, generators, pumps, construction tools, compressors, welders.
- Parts and components: prefabricated bridge sections, fastening material, seals, bolts, nuts, anchoring elements.
- Tools: hand and power tools, drills, wrenches, saws, angle grinders, ladders, work accessories.
- Maintenance supplies: cleaning agents, oils, lubricants, spare parts for maintenance work.
- Employee facilities: protective gear (helmets, vests, gloves), work clothing, small personal items, and possibly a simple rest area or shelter from adverse weather.
Organization and customization options
Although a decommissioned container may not be suitable for complex conversions or structural modifications, its interior can be adapted with simple alterations. Interior fittings may include shelves, racks, hooks for hanging tools or mobile boxes. This enables efficient organization and quick orientation within the stored material and equipment.
How much fits into a 20‑foot container
A standard 20‑foot container provides an internal volume of about 33 m³. This means you can comfortably store several pallets of construction material, all necessary tools, equipment and employee supplies. Having everything centralized and organized on the site greatly improves work efficiency and safety.
A decommissioned container is a practical, economical and safe solution for storage on bridge construction sites. It protects construction materials, parts, tools and employee facilities from moisture, dust and theft. It allows easy handling and rapid relocation according to site needs. Its versatility and durability make it an indispensable helper for any bridge project. If you need flexible and efficient storage space directly on the construction site, a decommissioned container is the right choice.
