Current challenges in shipping: The Red Sea and rising costs

12. 9. 2024

Maritime transport, a key pillar of global trade, has faced several significant challenges recently, which could have far-reaching consequences for international trade. The biggest issues currently are the transportation restrictions in the Red Sea and the dramatic increase in shipping costs.

One of the main factors affecting maritime transport is the situation in the Red Sea. Due to political and security risks in the area, particularly because of the activities of the Yemeni Houthis, many carriers have decided to avoid this traditional route. As a result, the capacity for transportation between Asia and Europe could decrease by up to 20 percent. This restriction has the potential to seriously disrupt supply chains and increase the cost of shipping goods.

Another significant issue is the sharp rise in shipping costs. According to recent reports, the average cost of shipping a container has increased by more than 250% compared to the previous year. This trend has caused many retailers to face higher prices, which may lead to higher prices for goods in stores and declining profits. On the other hand, shipping companies benefit from this, with their stocks, such as those of Maersk, seeing significant growth in recent days.

Despite these challenges, maritime transport remains an essential part of global trade. Analysts expect that a long-term shift away from maritime container transport is not realistic, although current issues require new strategies and adaptation to new conditions.
